Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

I just got a new computer with Windows 8 and cannot connect my JP 6500 Officejet wireless.  If I attach it to the computer with a USB port, it does work but not wireless.

Re: Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

Hi Rharring,

Which model of Officejet 6500 do you have (E709 or E710)?

HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor. HP recommends that you download and install the Print and Scan Doctor any time you need to troubleshoot a problem with your HP printer from the link below.

Let me know what errors you receive?

Re: Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

Hi Rharring,

Does the printer have a valid IP address Example: 192.168.1.100?

If so, Can you access the printers EWS - Embedded Web Server by typing the printers IP address into the address bar of Internet Explorer?

Download and install the full feature software and driver below.

Re: Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

After reinstalling from your download the error is that my printer has an IP #169.254.46.5 and the PC has an IP #192.168.1.68 and they are not compatible.
Can this be fixed or will I have to buy a new printer? This one is only 2 years old.

Re: Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

Hi Rharring,

The 169 IP address is an indication that the printer is not connected to your wireless network. Follow the steps below to connect the printer to your network, and then try reinstalling the printer.

Connect to the wireless network

  1. Press the Setup ( ) button on the product control panel.
  2. Press the Arrow button ( ) to select Network Settings , and then press the OK button.
  3. Press the Arrow button ( ) to select Wireless Setup Wizard , and then press the OK button.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the network setup

Re: Cannot connect to Windows 8 Wirelessly.

IT is connecting to my wireless network but the IP number is wrong and I don't know what the "key" is. If I go to advance settings to change the IP number, I get a warning not to do that. Right now I CAN print with USB connections - how should I proceed.

Hi Rharring,

If you don't remember the passkey to your network you will need to speak with the person who set it up for you. Once you have the passkey you can connect the printer to your wireless network, and then install the printer wirelessly. Until you are able to aquire the passkey you should be able to use the printer while it is connected USB. You can try using the utility below to aquire the passkey to your network.
