I am using an Officejet 4500 G510n-z printer (model number CN547A) with firmware version MWM2FN0944AR via several Ubuntu linux computers. I have picked a hostname for the printer and configured my DNS server to resolve that name to the printer's IP. I also configured my router's DHCP server to assign the same IP to the printer every time and try to assign it the hostname I chose. But the printer refuses the hostname suggested by the DHCP server. So I tried to manually set it. I cannot find a place to set the printer's hostname anywhere! I've looked everywhere: manual, printer menu, network settings pages, HP device manager installed on the computers, the forums. In the mDNS section of its network management page, it says:
If a user-specified host name has not been assigned, the default host name HPxxxxxx is used, where xxxxxx are the last 6 digits of the LAN hardware (MAC) address. This option cannot be modified.
So it seems to contemplate a user changing this. But then says users can't. Huh? What am I missing?

Did you look on the Embedded Web Server? Type the printer's IP into a browser address bar. You'll figure it out from there.

@PrintDoc: Yes, I looked on the embedded server. Sorry if that wasn't clear. That's what I meant when I used the phrases "network settings page" or "network management page." It has a section on mDNS, but as I said, the user can't change the hostname.

Hmm, sorry I missed that. On most HP printers there is a field you can see and change the hostname. It is on the Network or Networking tab.
I guess yours does not offer this functionality.
Maybe someone else knows???
