Connecting my Officejet Pro L7580 to my my home wireless gateway

Is it possible to connect my Officejet Pro L7580 All-in-One directly to my Motorola Wireless Gateway?  I envision the printer becoming visible by other wireless devices and would allow me to print wirelessly from laptops, my iPhone, etc.  The printer is currently connected via USB cable directly to our home pc.  From a wireless perspective, I currently have the printer available to print wireless via connecting first through the home pc.  It works intermittently and the home pc must be on for it to work.  My Wireless Gateway only has one Ethernet port which is connected to the home pc and does have one USB port.  Not sure of the proper term for the size of this USB port but it is not standard and is the size associated with the USB output on most printers.  Thanks!

Your printer does not have a wireless radio, but it does have Ethernet.  If your gateway only has one port, simply buy an Ethernet Switch to expand the number of ports.

Then, plug both your printer and PC into that switch, plug the switch into the gateway, cycle power on the gateway and you are good to go.

Now you just need to run or install the software on all the computers that want to use the printer (unplug the USB cable to the printer first) and select Network printer when it asks.

Great thanks.  One last question, in doing what you describe can I also keep the printer connected via USB directly to the desktop PC?

Yes, you can keep it connected, but I don't know why you would want to.  All of its functions will be available through the gateway connection.

Well, you really cannot make it wireless because it is not a wireless model (like the L7700 series).  You CAN, however, plug the printer into your wireless router with an Ethernet cable and have all devices on the network, regardless of how they connect, print to and scan from the printer.

Need help? Let me know what router you are using and what operating systems you have on your computers.

I have an HP Officejet Pro L7580.  I would like to make it wireless to allow my Dell laptop, I Pad, I Pod, and Galaxy tab to be able to print.  I have connected the printer to my wireless router (Cisco Linksys E2000) with a ethernet cable.   I have alos downloaded the latest print driver on the Dell, I also dwonloaded the HP wireless utility, but the Dell will not print unless I am connected with the USB cable.

Any help would be appreciated

OK, once the printer is plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.
2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.
3. Click the Add a printer
4. Select Local printer
5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
12. Click Finish.

I didn't have to go through all those steps and mine were a little perverse: the printer was already set-up on my computer.  But, I searched and found it--after I made sure it was hooked up to the router.  Then, after I selected the only printer visible, I had to find the brand and model (maybe I didn't click on it, although it was highlighted in a dark-blue hue as many things are when they are highlighted on computers).  After that, I "didnt' share" (Thank you for that, although I'm not sure there is a problem with sharing my printer as I have a password on my wireless--is that the same?).  Then--I should be using semi-colons, huh?--I printed a "test" page and I was off-and-running.
