Thanks Printdoc. Have managed to get hold of and old Netgeat router/modem so will try that tomorrow. Trouble is that's from an ISP as well.

If you have some luck with that, note that good routers are like $40 these days. Keep your search limited to Linksys and Netgear.

First the good news. I got the router working Ok and my iphone "remote" works fine.
Installed the printer from cd and no sign of "Device not reachable'. And there's our old friend 'Bonjour' next to the printer. Great.
The bad news it won't print wirelessly. Tried every thing, uninstalling, scrubber, default. No luck.
In "system prefs> > Printer& Fax > Reset printing system". Then "Add printer". Get "photosmart 4700 - Bonjour".
Open "printer queue". Says 'Printer ready". Try to print and click on printer icon in Dock and says ' Printing - 0% complete". And that's where it stays.

OK, progress, great!
It all looks good except installing the printer from the CD. The CD is not meant for 10.6 (at least I don't think so, is it labeled as such?).
So, let's uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
Finally, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

Sorry Doc. No luck. Install all. Reset printers. Go to support and Drivers> c4780 and find 2 options. 1st for inside USA. 2nd is HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Printer/Linksys Router Bundle ›. Have tried them both.
Next tried + 'add printer 'and get both USB and Bonjour in left pane. Select Bonjour and make default. Software downloads, open Print Queue. Says 'Printer ready" but when I goto HP Utility it shows both USB and Network printers RED. And says No information available.
Also tried the IP route that worked with the old router but it shows RED also and "Cannot connect to printer"

Make sure you have this installed: HP Printer Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6 & 10.7
This is the correct software. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloa

Well, installed Apple drivers and the other recommended software after uninstalling all and resetting printers, chose 'Network', then chose 'Bonjour', says 'Printer ready'. Goto 'HP Utility>Device info'. This says 'Incompatible components' and 'No information" about the printer except thet the Driver is 'HP Inkjet 1 Driver 2.5.2'
I think I have reached the end with this, taking up too much of my time and yours. Will go back to old router as I can print but not scan to file but can live with that.
Once again Thanks for your time and help.
Sean.
