There are two ways to setup a network folder: the wizard or through the EWS (embedded web server).
The wizard can be accessed by opening your printer Software and selecting Scanner Actions.
The EWS can be accessed by entering your printer's IP address (can be obtained by pressing the antenna icon) in the address bar of a web browser.
Really, it is up to you on where to place the network folder. Every person has a different preference. Some prefer to have the folder on their desketop as it is easy to access, but I prefer to have it somewhere else to prevent cluttering my desktop.
When you create the shared folder, make sure it is not read-only. You can verify this by right-clicking the folder and selecting properties and there will be a check box for read-only at the bottom of the properties window. If it is checked, then nothing will be able to write to it and this would cause errors with digital filing solutions.
Page 53 of the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Manual has steps listed to setup a Scan to Network Folder option.
