ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

Just bought the ENVY printer, but have only been using it for a few days and it keeps going to sleep or dropping.  I tried the usual - static IP, reboot router, reboot printer, Firewall off, Intrusion Protection off, Computer to Printer direct link - its seems like there is an issue between the printer and router.

The only way I can bring the printer back online, is to switch off the wireless radio, then on......

BUT there following seems to make a major difference -

Disable Security - Works
WPA Personal TKIP - Drops
WPA Personal AES - Drops
WPA2 Personal Mixed - Drops

Any ideas, must be very unusual for security to make a difference.......

Here are a few ideas:

1. Make sure the router firmware is updated.

2. Make sure the printer firmware is updated.

3. Change the router channel to 11 (I know, it is weird, but it works).

4. Make sure the printer has a strong (3 or more bars) signal from the router.

Re: ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

Tried all those things initially.  I have full stength, I also tried manually connecting the client to the printer via. wireless, which resulted in no dropping, therefore I think its a compatibility thing with the router.

The channel 11 change did not help, tested it over night.......

OK, I am stumped.  Do you have another router to try?

Re: ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

Just ordered a new one on Saturday, so should arrive tuesday.

Its definately a conflict with the security. I have been testing over the weekend.

Interested in your findings.

Just setupa 114 for a friend who uses a Linksys W160N (Cisco owns Linksys).

If printer goes to power save (looks like highest option is 15 minutes and no disable I see), you have to reenter router password to print.

There are a few things to try:

1. Make sure the printer has a strong wifi signal.  It may not be able to find a weak signal upon waking.  Move or re-position the printer/router.

2. Do not use WEP, it can sometimes cause these issues.

Re: ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

Thank you for reply..

The signal is not a problem, and we are suing WPA not WEP.

Printer is on their desk, actually 5 to 10 Ft away from router.

It appears the printer goes to sleep, and drops connection

To complete a print session, she will have to reenter the router security password.

It will then print.  The Envy 114 is not keeping the password is seems.:smileyfrustrated:

Re: ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

Is there another way to make sure the printer keeps the password, and is there a way to disable power saving (on all the time)?

Re: ENVY 114 \ Cisco WRNS4400N Combination Dropping

There may be a way to change the sleep settings in the embedded web server.  Type the printer's IP address into a web browser's address bar.  Navigate to the Settings tab and see if there is something there.

Also, you can set a static IP address and external DNS for the printer:

- Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). Yours is 192.168.1.100 to .149.  Let's use 192.168.1.200 for your printer.
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
- Click 'Apply'.

Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.

After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
