Dear all,
I have been using a HP Deskjet 3050A for a couple of years wirelessly fine. I have recently got a new laptop which is Windows 8.1 and has USB 3.0 ports and I am struggling to get the printer to work wirelessly.
I have downloaded the correct software from the HP website for WIndows 8.1 and installed it all okay. However when I try and set up the printer to work wirelessly (by plugging in the cable from printer to laptop) it will not work as it says it cannot connect as 'USB composite device is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0' (I get this statement when I troubleshoot as plugging the cable in prompts nothing to happen).
Is there a way around this as I dont really want to buy a new printer?

It might sound silly, but did you try reloading or refreshing the page multiple times? You could also try a different Browser too. You might have some kind of security or antivirus blocking the port, maybe a firewall?
I found a suggestion made by another community member, you might consider trying this;
"Instead of going to an HTTPS page from the HTTP page, start out in the HTTPS pages.
Example: Normally, you would go to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to access your printer's web interface, and then you click the link to one of the HTTPS pages.
Try this: Go to httpS://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (capitalized only for effect). This will bring you to the homepage of the printer, but there won't be any information on it. Click the Settings Tab, and then the Security link. You will be brought to a screen to create a password for the Admin account for the SSL pages. Once you've created this password, it will all work the way it's supposed to."
Another thing you can try is clicking the compatibility mode /view icon;
As you can see, I do not have one true answer, but I have many guesses. I will do the best I can to help you figure this out! 🙂 Keep me posted.

I believe we can get the printer on the network. I have an idea, a strategy, to get your printer on your network.
- Restore the network defaults on the printer by pushing the wireless button, going to settings, and then restore defaults. The wireless button should then start flashing, this means it is now in autowireless mode.
- Connect to the network that the printer is broadcasting. It is usually HP-setup-3050a and then part of the MAC address. The wireless light will still be flashing on the printer at this point, this is normal since this is not an actual adhoc connection.
- Load up the Embedded Web Server (EWS) in the browser on your mobile device, or computer. The default IP for autowireless is 192.168.223.1.
- Go to the network tab along the top of the EWS.
- Click on Wireless Setup Wizard along the left hand side to begin configuring the printer.
You have now completed the Wireless configuration, follow the steps to start printing.
- The blue wireless light will go solid, put the computer back on your own network.
- Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer.
- In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
Please let me know if our efforts are successful or not! I hope to see this resolved 🙂

Thank you for your help!
I followed your instructions by connecting to the HP network and going to 192.168.223.1 in my browser.
Unfortunately when I click on 'Wireless Setup Wizard' it just loads a new screen and says 'Internal System Error'. Should I just try again another time? Or is there a way to resolve this?

Well good news... That worked! I tried accessing the setup wizard in Internet Explorer rather than Chrome and it worked no problem! Then following your next steps from your other post has the printer working 30 seconds later!
