I've had to look hard to find this thread and now that I'm here I'm simply flabberghasted. It looks like we all bought a lemon. It works when it works, but it's basically defective for all the reasons mentioned here about this power saver mode problem. Someone should bring a class action suit against HP for this. I'm not a lawyer and don't know how to do that, but they deserve it, and we deserve a solution.
For now I'm simply turning mine off when its not being used, but that does keep it from being useful as a fax machine. I paid for much more than this. It is delivering mostly headaches.
I will never purchase another HP product again. HP are you listening? Do you even care?

I ended up junking mine and buying a Canon - It is a much better printer. You would think HP could & would do better than sell this kind of junk.

The only way to get the printer working again is to disconnect the power cable for a moment. Others are having the same issue from what I've read. Is there anyway HP can issue a firmware patch?

eek142-
I would not hold my breath for HP to put out a firmware fix for this - they probably think there's no money in it for them. Programmer time is costly and there are new products to push out the door and sell. I'm going to use this printer until I can afford something better, but will never look to an HP product again. My last HP laptop's hard disk died 3 months ago, after less than three years of use. That sealed HP's fate in my mind as a consumer.

I had not had the HP 6300 all that long and had problems with it. I have been a solid HP fan for years so I bought the 4500 and now am having the same freeze up in Power Save Mode that looks like a design problem lots of folks are also experiencing. (Sorry for the run-on sentence...but I am just PISSED. HP.....are you listening...I am DONE! Get this fixed NOW or I will do my best to spread the word how great brand X is better.

Very frustrating. I found a fix and followes all the steps. Now it is WORSE. It locks up as soon as I start to fax something. I guess I will be spending more time on this piece of junk.

this made my 4500 even worse. Now it won't reset when I unplug, it starts up in power save mode!! I have gone in circles with this product.
Try this......
Unplug unit from wall.
Plug nose.
Bring offensive HP product to disposal area and deposit therein.
Buy a Canon next time.

Not on topic but I had to use my 4500 for the first time to print out 4x6 semi-glossy photos and what a mess it made of them! It cut most of them off, printed only on 2/3 or 1/2 the sheet, inconsistently printed copies when I asked for more than one in a series (for instance one copy printed 1/3 and the other printed 1/2.) What a piece of junk this printer is! I tried every app I have to see if it would print any better and none of them managed to get consistent, decent photo prints out of this piece of cr@p. I've had inkjet printers since the late 80's and never seen one like this one, that can't print even print simple photos without messing up. I ordered a Brother to replace it today and the HP is going into the dumpster where it belongs. No more HP for me, ever.

I have always used a Lexmark Printer, but bought a HP this time, because it was wireless and I could not find a wireless lexmark. This is by far the worst printer I have ever bought. I have never had a printer that goes into safe mode and freeze there, and have to unplug the dang thing to get it to work again. Worst mistake I ever made was to but a HP printer, only had the thing for a month, but first chance I get I am going back to a lexmark, it doesnt even have to be wireless, because any printer is better than the HP Officejet 4500 Wireless!!!!
