I am assuming that your units are the wireless vesrion? If so, are you using the wireless feature to connect to the PC? If not, deactivate the wireless on printer if it is enabled.
1. On the printer control panel, press Setup icon
2. Navigate to "Wireless Menu"
3. Press OK button
4. Navigate to "Wireless ON/OFF"
5. Press OK button
6. Select "Off"
7. Press OK button (Observe the Wireless icon lights turns off)

I'm not sure what you mean by "use wireless to connect to pc" -- Yes, I send things from my laptop to the printer via my wireless router. Is that what you mean?
I don't think turning off the wireless will be the right solution because I need the printer on our wireless network. Am I misunderstanding something?

I have the same problem. Pressing the #1 did work but it is extremely frustrating. There must be a better solution.
To HP - Unplugging it everytime is not an acceptable solution.

Why hasn't HP addressed this problem with a simple firmware fix that disables power save mode? Clearly, the problem isn't isolated to only a few people; rather, it seems that EVERYONE who owns this product is having the same issue.
HP, if you are reading this, please issue an update to the firmware!

Had same problem. Used the underwear menu solution and likewise locked printer into power save mode permanently. Used the procedure to return to underwear menu by leaving inkwell door and scanner lid open during powercycle (3 times) - thanks...that worked. Now, setting the timeout to 18 hours might help some. Here's something I am going to try. I have a power timer that I used last Christmas for my outside lights. I am going to set it to be on most of the time but cycle power off then back on during the night/early morning hours. Might help.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.....AS EVERYONE ESLE, THIS IS VERY WEIRD, THAT HP WOULD SELL A PRINTER THAT HAS TO BE UNPLUGGED AFTER IT GOES INTO POWER SAVE MODE...YEP..STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO ONE AT HP CARES, WE ALL PAID FOR IT.....SO IT IS THE OLD SAYING...NO ONE CARES...THIS IS VERY STRANGE...BUT HP IS NOT WHAT IT USE TOBE!

My 4500 is on power save mode, I spoke to someone in "northern India" and he spend 49 minutes trying to fix this problem then he offered me a 24/7 help service for $169.00 for as he said 365 days. Wow, I just bought the warranty on it at the store when I bought the printer for $89.99 + warranty.
So, this seems to be a problem with the 4500 and I am thinking I will take it back! I have only had it for two weeks......
