yesterday noticed printer would not work. available, but said offline. Was working fine and only thing I can think happened was I updated mac software (OSX 6.8) and for some reason no longer worked. tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers with no help. seems to work when connected via usb but not wirelessly......now can't even find my device in utility unless connected via usb

OK, print a Wireless Network Test from the Network or Wireless menu on the front of the printer. Does it indicate that it is still connected to your network?
Next, if you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or 10.7 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
Finally, re-install your software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. Do not use the CD.

so test page showed all pass with OK signal and correct network.
I am using snow leopard and had used the online drivers.
I followed all your instructions below with the scrubber option, restarted, downloaded and installed apple HP software and then reset the printing system then finally downloaded the driver for 10.6 (snow leopard) from this site.
This required me to connect via USB as my printer did not show up initially under the install. I followed the instructions. Worked fine but as soon as I unplugged from USB it did not work and said offline again. also got the following error when opening printing utility:
INCOMPATABLE COMPONENTS
Some components installed on your computer were developed for another version of HP Utility. These components will not be loaded and some functionality related to your device will not be accessible. Please click HP Support item on the toolbar to visit HP Online Support site and download the latest versions of HP software.

OK, this is very strange.
Perhaps there is something wrong with your 10.6.8 update. Let's repair disk permissions:
Open Finder and go to Applications > Utilities
Double-click Disk Utility
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
When the disk permissions repair process is complete, restart your computer.
If that does not work, let's install the 10.6.8 Combo update. This ensures that all of your OS X updates are intact from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

Create another user account and try to print from that. Here is how:
1. Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts.
2. Unlock the padlock in the lower left.
3. Click the + sign to add another user. Add an Admin user and call it whatever you want.
4. Close System Preferences and then go to the Apple menu > Log Out...
5. Log back in as the new user.
6. Go to Apple menu > System Prefs > Print & Fax. Click the + sign to add the printer.
7. Try to print something.

Thanks for trying that. Now we know it is not your user account, but something on your Mac system. Good.
You can log back on with your regular account and delete the test account (System Prefs > Accounts > unlock > click the test account then the '-' sign at the bottom of the list).
What router are you using? Have you restarted it by pulling its power plug momentarily?

OK, thanks. Let's re-install the 10.6.8 update, but this time use the Combo version (which updates everything from 10.6.0-10.6.8): http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After you are done with that, re-download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Finally, repair disk permissions as described above.
