Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

What kind of encryption are you using (WEP, WPA, WPA2)?  Are you sure that 802.11g mode is enabled on the router?

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

Thank you for bothering to help !!

The security setting is WPA2-PSK  Port is DHCP (not sure what that means)

The router has 2 channels -the printer recognizes the 2.4 Ghz channel name (router also has 5 Ghz but they are suppose to run simultaneously.

I don't know how to check the 802.11g  setting you mention. But I will try to call Netgear to get that answer.

I will also check back for more help with this. It is really nice of you to help others out Dean.

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

Netgear says that the router is set to work with the 802.11g devices.  Any other ideas ?

Thanks

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

Thanks for that.

First, change the 2.4GHz channel from Auto (or whatever it is on right now) to 11.

If that does not work, try changing your encryption from WPA2 to WPA.

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

I think you found the answer to the problem. Actually I should have noted that the prompt for password indicates WPA. Unfortunately when going to change the router settings I get a warning that the speed and functionality of the router is diminished when setting on WPA. I wonder if this is a limitation of this specific HP printer, or if all of them have this limitation ?

Again, your assistance and communications are much appreciated. Thank you.

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

Your router's performance will be indistinguishable between WPA2 and WPA.  Your Internet service is probably way slower than either one's effect on your router.

Re: HP printer J4680 All-in-one will not recognize wireless router passphrase

Thanks again for the information.

Unfortunately even when I changed the router setting to WPA, the printer continued to give the error message that I entered the incorrect passphrase. The printout keeps saying security 'fail'.

I think I am resigned to only using this printer directly hooked up with the USB.

Again I do appreciate your help  - unfortunately I am feel reluctant to buy another HP printer though.
