Yes, same as ours, and the solution I proposed allows you to do this.

We use HP Officejet Pro L7780, L7580 and K5400 on our network. My solution works where the HP software fails to find the printer on the network even though it is definitely there and even though there are no existing printer ports pointing at it. I have not noticed this problem for L series printers since release of 8.03 HP software, but it is definitely still there with K series (software stuck at release 8.02).
My solution works well for us, it sets up standard printing but it does not give you the other HP stuff (Digital Imaging Monitor, Solution Centre etc). To be honest we don't want this stuff anyway.

Well, I can print to it using any computer on the network. What I cannot do is use the Digital Imagine product. The Vista machine does fine with the Digital Imaging feature. The XP machines do not.
I think there is a software issue with the Digital Imaging. Vista seems like the best bet for being able to fully utilize the machine. I hope Windows 7 works with it.
