Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I am using Dlink DSL-G604T ADSL wireless router to connect to the printer wirelessly and 2 computers. I have configured the printer to use the wifi facilities for the connectivity.

I have noticed that everytime i power on the Officejet 6500 wireless printer, my ADSL internet connection are cut off.

The following is the sequence of the activity that i have done:

1 Power on my ADSL Router and computers as per normal use

2 Use internet from either both of my computers

3 Internet is working fine.

4 As I need to use the Printer, I would then power up the printer

5 Right after the printer is on, the internet is cut off

6 Printing can be done smoothly from either computers, though

7 I can still access my router's web config page from the internet browser, but not to other external website.

8 the status of my ADSL Connection is still connected

9 I turn off my Printer

10 reboot my wireless router

11 computers are still on

12 Internet connection comes back online.

I did alternative sequence:

1. Power on my ADSL Router

2. Power on my Printer

3. Power on my Computers

4. As I tried using the Internet browser, there is no connection to external websites

5 I can still access my router's web config page from the internet browser.

6. the status of my ADSL Connection is connected

7. I turned off my printer

8. rebooting my ADSL router

9. computers are still on

10. Internet connection comes back online

the above problem has also happened, before i upgraded my Wireless Router firmware (recently upgraded).

I would like to share a problem (with solution) before upgrading my router's firmware:

1. the printer was unable to recognize the WEP password of the wireless router.

2. this is resolved by updating my wireless router.

3. My wireless router was initially set to automatic IP Assignment and that there is no option to provide a fixed IP Address

4. after updating the firmware, i can assign a static IP for the printer, reference to the printer MAC Address.

5. From here, I learned that the printer require a static IP Address for wifi connection.

From these problems, I feel The wifi technology is not fully integrated into printing technology yet.

For my problems above, So far OS types are not affecting the workability of the printer, since i am using both XP pro and Win 7 Pro 64bit on different computers

Hope to get some advice and solution on the internet disconnection issue which is linked to my ADSL Wireless router.

Thanks!

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

Sometimes DSL providers have more control over the router than the printer likes.

- Unplug the telephone line from the router
- Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
- Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the router.
- Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
- On that screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address).
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Leave the gateway and DNS blank
- Finally, plug in the phone line, reboot the router and test.

Finally, change from WEP if you can.  It is no longer secure (can be broken in 10 minutes with freeware) and has caused printer connection problems.  Choose WPA or WPA2.

I have tried changing to WPA using PSK, but no improvement.

Still the same situation. My DSL  internet connection still get disconnected a few seconds after I power on the printer.

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

DId you try the installation routine I outlined (unplugging the phone cord)?

Can you update the router's firmware?

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

Hi,

I did not do the installation routine as I dont see the necessity for it.

Anyway, all my configuration is already as per your instructions already (subnet mask ,etc)

before i updated my firmware, i already have this problem.

after firmware update, the issue still persist.

please help to elaborate on the reason for unplugging the telephone line.

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

The phone line allows your DSL provider to keep watch over the router.  I am not sure what it does, but it does control how and what devices attach to the router.

This process has proven to work many times with many people.  Please try it, what is the down side?

This worked for me. You may as well try it. Using a Netgear Router Wireless N 300.

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

I am having the same issue. I have a Thomson TG585 v8. (Not my choice)

At first, using wizard on printer, it got an IP and then all lights went solid on the router and my entire network was dead. I was able to determine that as soon as I set a DNS entry, the network bunged up.

I have done the above ....

I have connected the printer, I did manually set the IP, and left gateway and dns blank.

I can print to the printer, I can browse to it's web page and my network works.

But now, I can't get the printer to give me an email address to use ePrint. I can only do that from the printer.

The Internet test on the printer says all is fine. Going to the Webservices setup it says it has no connection to the internet?? Isn't that because the Gateway and the DNS is blank? But setting the DNS brings the router down.

Anyway to manually setup the webservices so so ePrint will work?

Re: Officejet 6500 wireless - Disconnect Internet connection for ADSL Wireless Router.

Have you enabled Web Services from the front of the printer?

Another trick is to go through the motions of setting the static IP as above but put the Google DNS into the DNS fields (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

Thanks Dean.
I'll try adding the Google dns entries.
it is enabled by the front panel. But when I try to setup email via front panel it fails.
