Officejet J4680 not installing on WiFi Network

I have tried several times to install the drivers for this printer. I do not get any message coming up asking for me to hook up the USB Cable. I get this vaguw message about not being able to locate the USB Cable then the software starts to uninstall everything. After several restarts of my laptop I was able to install the USB drivers without any problems, but this is not my perferred method of connection, since I have my WiFi network setup. Below is the information about my network setup that I have setup.

Infrastucture Type of connection being used here. I have 2 laptops, both running Windows XP Pro.

WPA-TKA Security being used for the security.

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 <--WiFi Router is cascaded to another router. This router is a Linksys WRT54GS and the primary Router is a Linksys WRT300N.

The Static IP of the printer I set to 192.168.1.105.

Subnet Mask is: 255.255.255.0

I would really like to know if it is possible to setup this printer on the WRT54GS Router, or do I have to connect it to the WRT300N? If I have to connect it to the 2nd router, then I will return the printer to the Store and see about getting another that I can connect via a wired solution.

Thank you in adviance for any assistance in this matter. I have not tlaked with Tech Support, since I really do not feel like spending several hours on the phone with them.

Thank You,

Tim

Re: Officejet J4680 not installing on WiFi Network

Since you might be running a double-NAT'd configuration, there are a few things to check for (btw -- I'm running a similar setup in my home, a D-LINK DIR-855 with an Apple Airport Extreme as a slave access-point):

  1. Is your goal to simultaneously run 802.11g and 802.11n wireless networks?
  2. Do you have the DHCP servers enabled on both the WRT300N and the WRT54GS?  If you do, they need to be configured for different subnets.  For example, if the WRT300N's subnet is 192.168.1.x, then the WRT54GS' subnet needs to be different such as 192.168.0.x.
  3. Assuming the WRT300N is connected to the internet, have you considered turning off the DHCP server on the WRT54GS and allowing the WRT300N to assign IP address to those devices connected to the WRT54GS?

To make this work properly, you need to do the following:

    1. Set the WRT54GS IP address for something other than 192.168.1.1 and to something that is outside the range of IP addresses the WRT300N's DHCP server uses.
    2. Connect the a LAN port from the WRT300N to a LAN (not the WAN) port of the WRT54GS.  In this setup, the WRT54GS is now an access-point instead of a wireless-router.

  4. Unless you setup the WRT54GS as an access-point, devices connected to the WRT300N will not be able to see devices connected to the WRT54GS.

The last item is key -- unless you logically convert the WRT54GS into an access-point, any network devices connected to your WRT54GS will not be visible from devices connected to your WRT300N.

BTW -- we use the WRT300N in my lab.  What do you think of this router?

Re: Officejet J4680 not installing on WiFi Network

Jim,

I actually followed the directions on cascading the routers together that was on Linksys' website and made double sure that the WRT54GS was setup with the Default Gateway being set to the 192.168.1.2. I will check tomake sure that the NAT is disable on the 54GS, since I really do not need it active.

My goal was to run the 54G as an access point on the first floor of my house, since the 300N is in the basement with the signal being degraded by the Furnace Hot Water Tan. The 54G has speed issues with my internet provider and since there was no firmware updates avaiable for Version 1.x of the 54GS Router, plus I was looking at upgrading to an N-series router. The DHCP Server is disabled on the 54GS Router, per teh setup instructions for cascading. I have the 300N connected to Port 2 on the 54GS rotuer and I can get online and access my Linksys NAS that I setup last year also and have not ahd any problems with this setup until now. I will look at the areas you have pointed out as possible problems and let you know.

I really like the 300N, since I would like to go with a straight N-series network for the speed, but at this time I'm still in the transistion.

Thanks,

Tim

I setup  printershare to print docs from my phone to the printer. Nothing is coming through the printer from my phone.

I can see the docs and it says that everything has been successfully printed.  How do I get the docs to print from wifi?

Help
