The drop down error message indicates that the wireless feature is not supported within Windows 7. Therefore I must use a USB wire to connect my HP 8500 Wireless Printer. Please explain. Thanks NancyWayne

What version of the 8500 do you have? A909 a, b, n or g?

OK, does it have a blue wifi light on the front? Some of the 8500 models did not have wifi, some did. I am trying to determine if yours does.

OK, that helps. Let's connect your printer to your wireless network:
On the front of the printer: Setup > Network > WIreless Setup WIzard.
Now, once the printer is connected to the router, get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. Choose "Network" or "WIreless" installation type when it asks.
