why for heavens sake have HP made it so ridiculously difficult to install this printer and get wireless working?? I feel I've wasted my money and would rather have stuck with my old trusty Canon.

Great vid but i have a few questions:

i've got an Officejet 4355 All-in-one that's phisically connected to my xp laptop with the usb cable. I've also set up a wireless network with a vista laptop. To access the printer on my vista machine, do i need to run the instructions on my xp machine or on my vista machine or on both?

In order for any given computer to access a "print device" (this is the term for the physical hardware that spits out pages with stuff printed on them), you must install the drivers that correspond with whatever operating system that computer is using. When those drivers are loaded, then a "printer" (this is a term for a logical device within the operating system) is created within that computer for that operating system. Applications on that computer send their print jobs to the logical "printer" which, in turn, translates those print jobs to something that can be understood by the physical "printer device." The key here is that there are usually different drivers for different operating systems. It's also important to note that when you load drivers, you are not actually loading anything on the print device, you are only installing the software on your PC that allows the PC to communicate with the print device. I hope I didn't lose you yet, because, now that I've given you all that preliminary explanation, here's the short(er) answer:

Each PC that is going to use a given physical print device must load the drivers for that device that correspond to the operating system on the PC. The only exception to this is if you are sharing a printer out from a print server (the print server does all the hard work then), but that doesn't apply here. In your case, you would load the Vista drivers on your Vista machine and the XP drivers on the XP machine. Remember from the video that whichever machine you are loading the drivers on will have to be connected to the print device via USB until the driver installation is complete. So, when you finish with one PC, move the USB cable to the other PC and start the process all over again.

This is so not working for me.

I've installed the HP j4550 on my main PC via a USB cable. When I ran the install program, I got the radio button to select a connect via a USB cable or wireless network, just like at the 3:00 mark in the video above. I completed the installation and everything works fine.

I then tok the printer over to my other computer that is connected wirelessly to my network. I ran the install program there and was never given the radio button choice for connection. I started the program with the computer not connected, just like the software says. It then gets to the point where it tells you to connect the USB cable. If I do that, then the install proceeds and never asks about wireless. It just installs as a USB printer. If I instead check the checkbox that says I will connect the printer later, the installation program quits.

How can I get this thing printing wirelessly??

Let's see if we can figure this out. First, it would be helpful to know which operating system(s) you're using on each of the computers: XP, Vista, etc. Next, tell us the complete name of the setup file(s) you're using to install the drivers on each of the computers. If you can give me that info, perhaps I or one of the more experienced printer gurus may be able to figure out what's going on.

My wireless printer worked well and then stopped.  I've done everything I can to restart it, including removing it, reloading it and I'm being blocked by Symantic event manager and another Symantic.  The handbook advises adding a number of .exes to the trusted firewall.  I haven't a clue how.  I do know the hpqkygrp.exe is faded in the program file.  I've also learned a lot of new words.  Mostly @##!!....  To put it simply: HELP!

Do you have a similar video (or instructions) on how to setup the All-in-one in ad hoc mode?

I tried everything with my j6410 and my hp laptop, and even with the default hpsetup settings the computer doesn't find the 6410.

I can see the settings of 6410 using a browser at http://169.254.151.207 and even scan, but the wireless installation never completes.

I am an M.D. and cannot use my practice efficiently. I can't print prescriptions or use EMR.

Please help me.
