I do not have any explaination as to why HP only developed the firmware update application for Windows. What you can do is you can temporarily connect the printer to a Windows PC, then update the firmware of the printer, and then use it with your Mac again.
HP says this printer is supported on the Mac platform. I bought the thing in an Apple Store. I bought it because I thought HP had the best Mac support of all the other manufacturers. It's not like the update is a windows specific update, or updates the windows drivers, this is a firmware upgrade for the printer itself... it should be available to all supported platforms. What if I don't own a Windows computer? Is HP telling me that I have to buy Windows to use this printer? As it happens I do have a virtualized windows install inside of VMware Fusion, but I don't know if that's going to work. But it shouldn't matter, I shouldn't have to buy another OS if my OS is supposed to be supported.
How can we be put in touch with the developers to find out why there isn't a Mac version?
I certainly won't be buying printers from HP anymore if they continue to treat their users this way. I've been telling everyone I know about how I need to unplug and plug in my HP printer whenever I want to print.
