c4780 - won't do wireless printing

Hi,

I have spent about 2 hours so far installing and setting up my new c4780. I ran the set up CD, completing everything successfully (though not first time), including setting up the wireless connection. However when I got to the end of the set up process it said that the printer set-up had failed. It hadn't got to the point of telling me to remove the USB cable (which it said would happen).

The upshot of all this is that it prints when connected to the pc by the usb cable, but if I disconnect the cable and try to print wirelessly, it tells me 'the printer is off-line'.

The wireless signal is present (blue light showing) and the signal is strong.

Can anyone suggest what I should do - not too technical if possible, though I am patient in following instructions!

Thanks.

Re: c4780 - won't do wireless printing

OK, print a Network Configuration Page (or similar wording) from the front panel of the printer (start with the Scan button).

On there it will tell you whether the printer is connected to your router or not.  If it is, type the IP address into a browser and see if you can see the printer's internal settings.

What computer operating system and router and ISP are you using?

Re: c4780 - won't do wireless printing

It's Windows XP and BT.

I have a wireless network test report with a diagnostic and configuration summary all of which it passes 100%. Have typed in IP to browser - it comes up with my device and doesn't seem to show any problem (though I'm not sure what I am looking for.

Thank you again.

Re: c4780 - won't do wireless printing

OK, you are in great shape.  The printer is connected to your router and you can see it from your computer.  You are so far ahead of most folks and are almost done.

I am going to assume that the software somehow loaded to completion (I could be wrong about this).  If so, let's add the printer manually:

1. Click "Start" button --> Printers and Faxes.
2. Under Printer Tasks, click "Add Printer".
3. Click "Next" button on the Add Printer Wizard window.
4. Select "Local printer attached to this computer". Deselect "Automatically detect and install My Plug and play printer". Click "Next".
5. Under Select a Printer Port option, select "Create a new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click "Next" button.
6. In the "Welcome to the Add Standard TCP/IP printer port wizard" make sure that the printer is turned on and connected to same network that your computer is connected to. Click "Next" button.
7. Under "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port" enter the printer's IP address. Click "Next" then click "Finish".
8. Now, select HP from the list of manufacturers, select your printer from the list of Printer models and click 'Next' button.
9. If you can't find your printer, you'll need to find the install CD and use the "Have Disk" option to select one of the hp*.ini files. Alternatively, you can select another HP printer model from the same type.
10. Add the print spooler name and click "Next".
11. Click "Next"
12. Click "Next" and then "Finish"

Thank you very much. I just went through the process you described, with success. It has printed wirelessly now from both the pc and a laptop.

Re: c4780 - won't do wireless printing

Thank you sooooo much! I have a Officejet J4680c and my wireless printing has been extremely moody to the point that I uninstalled everything and reinstalled it all but it wouldn't work. It was so frustrating because both the computer and the printer were connected, but it wouldn't work. I found your post, tried it and it works! Absolutely wonderful!

Again, thank you!
