My HP Color Laserjet 2840 worked perfectly for years when connected to a PC running XP. I recently converted to a MacBook Pro running OS X V10.7. The print function works fine but the HP Director icon is nowhere to be found so to select a Scan function is not possible. My goal is to scan documents and have the output end up in a folder on my Mac. Any ideas? I see the HP 2840 has print driver support for OS X 10.7 ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&

Hi,
As you may find listed below, I affraid the product no longer fully supported by any OS X higher than 10.5, and only print functionality provided for Lion:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/D
You may try the following workaround, although i cannot guarantee it will workor will be stable as expected. Remember the software is not intended for the OS, therefore may be used at your own risk:
Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan, select the 2840 print queue ant then click the Minus sign to remove it.
Download the Mac OS 10.5 installation below:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL22358/l
Skip the Setup Assistant and follow the steps till the installation will finish.
Perform the following steps in order to provide the Setup Assistant the right permissions to complete on the unsupported OS:
1. Open Terminal from the Utilities folder
2. Type “sudo “ (with space) in the Terminal.
3. Locate the HP Setup Assistant in folder Applications/HP LaserJet Software
4. Right-click the HP Setup Assistant and choose “Show Package Contents”.
5. Open the “Contents” folder and then click “MacOS” folder. It should contain the Unix Executable File of the HP Setup Assistant.
6. Drag the HP Setup Assistant (Unix Executable File) into Terminal and press Enter. Terminal will ask for the password of the user.
7. After providing the password, press the Enter Button.
Now follow the Setup Assistant Steps to complete.
Another option is to use any 3rd part scan software which officially support the scanner and OS X Lion, as VueScan as example.

Shlomi

Thank you for the input...
Good news, bad news. I was able to follow all of the outlined steps successfully and the HP Director icon appeared on my tool bar. Unfortunately, all of the buttons such as scan, print, email that are found once I click on the HP Director are grayed and do not operate. Close but no scan.

Hi,
I believe that repeating steps 1 to 7 may help,
Make sure to carefully follow the steps as is (as including the space within step 3 as example)
This is the only workaround I aware of, and to add, it is not an official solution as a such does not exists.
If you still facing any issue after completing the steps, I would recommend you to consider the second suggestion to consider any 3rd party solution as officially, scan no longer supported for your product while using Lion.

Hello ShlomiL
Your Solution worked for me on 10.8.1. Just remember to use the Printers IP and not the .local version if you setup your network printer / scanner. The only downside is, that the scanner software is starting but not showing any windows. Do you have a soultion for that?
Regards. Patrick

Hello Patrick,
I affraid I have no further steps to suggest for such a problem,
As I mentioned, the steps allow you to bypass the permission issue..
The software is not intended for the OS, was not tested on the OS and for such performance issue I doubt if there is much to do..
After all, the latest scanning software was for 10.5 and prvided in 2008... since than scanning was no longer supported by any newer Mac OS..

Hello Shlomi
Thanks for your answer. Scanning worked perfectly fine in 10.7. all I had to be carefull of is to ignore software updates ak. driver updates from HP through the mac Software update process. I updated to 10.8 last week. Printing with the 2840 has never bin an issue. Just the scanning. And for the moment I think I'm just a tiny little stepp away from getting it to work again. The Printer and Scanner works perfectly fine and I don't want to throw it away. So do you have any Idea why the scanning software gui is not loading? What did apple change between 10.7 and 10.8 to prevent it from displaing the guy? The HP Direcor guy is loading and everything is fine.
Clicking on Scan loads the scanning App but no GUI
Thanks for trying to help me ![]()

Hi Patrick,
I affraid there is not much which can be done.
The software seems not to work on the OS which is not compatible with, there is no troubleshooting we may follow.. there are many differences within the OS envoirnment, many libraries and system files migth be re-developed or updated...
