Let's reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Really? The only way to set up this printer wirelessly is by deleting all my other printers? That is rather a pain because my work printers are all set up with custom settings and formatting.
Is there no way to do this without deleting all my other printers?
Thanks

Sure. Tell me what version of OS X you are using. What router?

It's OSX 10.6.8 with a Qualcomm 3G router from Cell-C. The printer seems to have picked up the wireless network okay, when I go into wireless settings it gives me an ip address 192.168.10.133 and I can set up the printer using that IP address. It automatically picks up the printer type (which I assume means that it contacted the printer at that IP address), and then I can go into "Open Print Queue" -> "Printer Setup" -> "Utility" -> "Open Printer Utility" and it opens up a window the printer's information, such as: model, service ID, serial number, driver version (which is "HP Inkjet 9 Driver 1.4.0).
However, when I try to print something, I get "Connecting to printer... Network host '192.168.10.133' is busy; will retry in 15 seconds..."
Thanks,
Andrew

When you double click on the printer in System Prefs > Print & Fax, are there any print jobs "stuck"? If so, select them all and click the Delete button above them.
If that does not work, select the printer in the list, click the '-' sign to delete it, then the '+' sign to re-add it.

There are no print jobs stuck in any of the printers. I have deleted and added the printer several times. When I add the printer I need to put in the IP address - it does not autodetect it as the manual seems to imply.
Thanks

When you add the printer, what happens when you click the "Default" tab in the resulting window? Does the printer not show up?
Let's run test: open System Preferences: User Accounts, click the padlock in the lower left and then click the '+' sign at the bottom of the list of users. Add an Administrator account.
Now, log on as that user and add the printer in System Prefs and see how it goes.

FANTASTIC! When I went to add the printer then hit the default tab it came up and worked! Thanks very much for your help, I should have explored more of the buttons and tabs... but 'default' seems a rather strange name for that tab... perhaps 'search' would have been better... Anyways, that's not HP's fault, that's Mac.
Thanks again!
