What operating system? How is the printer connected? If wireless, what router?

I am having this problem also. I am connected to the printer by a USB cable. When I ran the setup, the computer never saw the printer. I click the box saying that I will connect by USB and the program asks me to go ahead and connect the printer with the USB. I do that and it never jumps to the screen where it says wait for the program to recognize the connection. I only have the option to click a box saying to continue with the setup and I'll connect the printer later. So I continue with setup, the printer is connected by USB cable, and I'm able to print from any program, no problem. When I try to scan I get the message
"Scanner communication cannot be established. Ensure you product is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If you are installed using a cable connection (USB or Ethernet), ensure both ends of the cable are secure."
I have checked the cable, I swapped ports to use one that I know is working because my keyboard had been plugged in there. Plugged securely into the port on my computer, plugged securely into the port on my printer. What is the problem?

Have you changed your USB cable? There is no USB hub in the path, right?
Let's reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

I have tried several USB cables. No USB hub in the path. I did remove the HP printer, remove all the programs, and ran a disk clean-up. Then I reloaded the printer and this time the program was able to recognize that the printer was attached. The setup completed perfectly but, when I try to scan, I get the same message -
"Scanner communication cannot be established . . ."
Do yo still think I should reset the printing system? If so, I need help finding System Preferences. I am running Windows XP and I don't see how to get to System Preferences.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were on a Mac, I am not sure why, maybe just wishful thinking.
Did you restart your PC between all of the uninstalls and the reinstall of the new HP software?

Try using Image Capture (in your Applications folder). Click your printer on the left side, then "Show Details" along the bottom.
