I can no longer print in black and white (from the computer). The command works directly from the printer, but it no longer works when commanded from the computer. Color printing still works just fine. I tested the ink and am running at full capacity. The computer is connected and sending commands.

The test run printed four color boxes with blank outlines. The colors were clear.

Hello, @Mullybones

Thanks for the reply!

I need to know the operating system on your PC. Also, like I suggested in my above post, try few copies and check the result.

Alternatively, you can try cleaning the "Print head" on your printer manually. If the issue is related to the printer hardware, then this is the best steps to fix the same. You can follow this HP video as reference: http://hp.care/2bVf9iT

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

@Mullybones

Thank you for joining HP Forums.}

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the printer no longer prints in black & White,

Don't worry as I have a few steps to help, however, to provide an accurate solution I need a few more details:

Have you attempted to print using the grayscale option under printer preferences?

If the grayscale doesn't work, did you attempt to clean the printhead?

In the meantime, Please try the steps mentioned on this related HP Forums post that seems to have helped many others:

Keep me posted,

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

Thanks for the information. I performed the cleaning steps on the printer, or should I say I set the printer to clean itself. It printed the test page clearly (black & white, color). When I proceeded to print 3 pages of text, the first page was in dark black and white; however, the print faded on the next and even more on the next page.

I cleaned the connection point of the cartridge and the printer. I ran another test and there was no black on the page. This is a new cartridge.

Any ideas?

Hello, @Mullybones

Thanks for the update! I would like to jump in with a suggestion 🙂

I understand that you are having difficulties while printing black from your computer. To assist you with this issue, I need to know operating system on your PC. Also, I see that you tried making a copy, but I would suggest you try that exercise again.

Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the black copy option on the printer control panel. I want to try this on 2 or more different documents. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

If the copy comes out fine, try uninstalling the printer drivers and re-installing them.

If you are using MAC OS X, then follow the steps below:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)

If your PC is running Windows OS, then follow the steps below:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://hp.care/2hTZp3b to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

I tried scanning (black only) again and got a hint of black print. No other print jobs worked, so it isn't the computer - it is the printer.
