HP Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows Vista

I have been trying to install the software on my HP laptop that has VISTA OS the past 2 days.  I successfully installed it on my phone and IPAD without any problems.  I've tried downloading the software from the internet as well as using the DVD to no avail.  After I execute the EN7640_117.exe command to install I get the same error message: Call to DriverPackageInstall returend error 5 for package. C:Program files\HP\IEP Envoy 7640 series\DriverStore\NGScandriver\HP WIA_En7640.INF.  A caller of driver package Install must be a member of the administration group to install adriver package.  I tried uninstalling the Epson Workforce 630 series that was previously installed.  I also followed all steps for troubleshooting from the HP Installation Failure troubleshooting package installed on my desktop.  I still get the same message.  I've tried it 5 times.    Can someone help?

Hi @Diane16

Welcome to the HP Forums!

It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are having issues installing the software on your computer.

I’d love to help!

Recommend you to uninstall the printer again from Programs and features (Control Panel)

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it.

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the driver’s tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Restart the PC.

Update the firmware on the printer using the control panel on the printer. (Will require the printer to be connected to your wireless network.)

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.

Thank you for your assistance. I got as far as the firmware sentence and then got lost but I did try following a few other tips from others related to error 5 including changing config sys settings changing to admin account, hp troubleshooting and downloading software numerous times and eventually got the printer to install but I still can't install the scanner SOft ware on the laptop.  Still trying.  Any additional tips for that?

Ok. I followed the instructions and downloaded the full feature software v34.2 solution again but the scanner still won't install. I'm still getting Error 5 for package C:/program files/hp/hp envy 7640 series/driverstore/ngscandriver/hpwia_en7640.inf .. so I tried the alternate options that you provided.  I can scan from Windows Photo Gallery and also from Paint.  I have to watch both videos to figure out how to adjust and resize.  Biggest problem is finding them again in my directories because they didn't go where I thought I put them.  I can also scan directly from the printer and email it to myself so these workarounds will be fine. Thanks for all your help.

Hi @Diane16

Thank you for posting back.

I recommend you to uninstall the printer software completely and restart your computer. Then disable the firewall or any Antivirus program you have on the computer and then try installing the software.

Thanks.  I will consider uninstalling and reinstalling the software over again but it took me three days to get the printer installed and I'm afraid if I do anything else I'll be back at square 1 again with neither the printer nor the scanner working from my laptop.  Not sure it's worth the aggravation since I don't use the laptop as much as I use my IPAD and Iphone.  Both the printer and scanner work from those.   It might just be easier to buy a new laptop with an updated operating system and start with that instead.

Hi @Diane16

Thank you for posting back.

Yes, I recommend you the same. As Vista is a very old operating system you are having issues installing the printer software.

If any other questions arise, please feel free to write back to me.

Take care and you have a great holiday season.

Cheers!
