HP LaserJet Pro M104a
Microsoft Windows XP

I have installed a new-bought HP LaserJet Pro M104a to my desktop with Windows XP SP3. First, the installation program (from CD) demanded to install Microsoft Net.Framework 3.5, which was not on my computer. I installed it and repeated the printer installation from CD. The installation finished successfully. The printer is "Default", "Ready", not paused, in the proper virtial USB port, etc. But it doesn't print anything, even a test page. The job appears in the queue for a second, and then dissapears, as if being fulfilled.

I tried HP Print and Scan Doctor. It showed a column of green (OK) checkmarks but failed to print a test page as well. When I answered "Test Page was not printed", it offered to print a diagnostic page. The printer printed a diagnostic page (with a picture of the printer and HP logo in the NE corner). Then Doctor said that there is a software issue which it cannot correct and offered to delete and reinstall the software. Reinstallation (both from CD and from the website) gave nothing new.

I tried another cable and different USB ports (at the front and at the rear of my system block) and changed speed of USB connection in BIOS. I installed updates of Windows XP. Nothing changed.

I installed this printer with the same cable to a notebook and a netbook, both with Windows 10, and it works properly there. It only doesn't work with XP.

An additional observation. When I connect the printer to the USB port (or disconnect) the system makes the same sound as any other device when connected to the USB, but twice. It makes the same double sound when I turn off the power button on the printer (normally it blinks). Then, in 10-15 minutes after turn-off the system makes the same sound (which is not the case for mouse, flash-card, etc).

So, I'm stuck and need help.

Greetings @Frol_Kozzloff

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to print from your computer running on XP.

Don't worry, I am glad to help.

Kudos to you trying to print from other computers.

May I know which USB have you connected the printer? (Rear or front USB port of the Desktop)

Recommend you to uninstall the printer software using the procedure mentioned below.

Uninstall the printer from programs and features from the control panel.

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it.

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.

Restart the PC.

Update the firmware on the printer using the control panel on the printer. (Will require the printer to be connected to your wireless network.)

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

If the issue persists, uninstall the printer software again using the method suggested.

Once you have uninstalled the printer software, try using Windows built-in drivers and check. Click here for assistance.

Let me know if this helped.

Thank you, Chimney_83, for your answer.

<<May I know which USB have you connected the printer? (Rear or front USB port of the Desktop)

Normally, I connect my printer to the rear USB port, but I've tried both variants.

I've done all your steps, except of

<<Update the firmware on the printer using the control panel on the printer. (Will require the printer to be connected to <<your wireless network.)

It is M104a, not M104w, it hasn't wireless conection.

No effect. When downloading built-in drivers, one by one, Windows does it four times successfully, and on the fifth time it determines M101-M106 series and says that it cannot find the appropriate driver. So, the process cannot be finished properly and the printer appears not to be installed this way.

After my initial post and  before reading your answer, I found an error. When installing Net.Framework, the system created a temporary folder (on the non-system disc, with a long senseless name) and wrote paths linked to this folder in the registry. Then this temporary folder was deleted. At least wrong paths were in KB954550-v5 hotfix. So, there was an error in the log event: printfilterpipelinesvc.exe cannot be found. Also there were other wrong paths in the registry. Unfortunately, before checking the log event, I installed further updates (about 50) to my system, and during this process the previous restore points were deleted automatically. So, I uninstalled the new updates one by one manually, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the update with Net.Framework (3.5 and previous). Now there are no incorrect paths, and the log event doesn't show errors, but the printer still doesn't print.

I checked the box "keep spooler log event" (if I translate it into English correctly) on the server properties. In the log event, there are two strings about each document sent to the printer (test page, *.pdf, etc.): the first - printed  (but it says they are 0 bytes), and the second - deleted.

I think (however, not sure) the cause is in the incorrect installation of Net.Framework or some other Windows updates, and some tracks of this error in the registry. But I can't solve the problem still.

Thanks for the reply. Did you uninstall the printer software using the method suggested before installing the Windows driver?

If you have already tried that step. Recommend you to contact our phone support as they can take a remote of your computer and check the settings for you.

Keep me posted.
