OfficeJet 6500 E10-n
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have two computers hooked up to this printer on a wireless network. Both use Windows 10.  One works flawlessly. The other, an Envy M6 Notebook, worked fine until recently when it started disconnecting and  requiring that I reinstall the printer every time I want to print.  I seems to happen after the computer has been idle for the night or shut down.  The control panel shows "status: not connected."

When I look at the HP Network Summary using the printer's IP, it thinks I wired the printer with an ethernet cable as it displays "Wired (802.3)" while the other computer is properly listed as "Wireless (802.11)".  I always select the "wireless" option when installing the printer, but after a short while, it disconnects and  then shows "wired'. How do I convince the printer that it is connected wirelessly?

Hi @Auditory,

Thanks for replying. I understand you have tried the steps suggested and still having the same issue when the laptop is restarted. Don't worry let's try these steps here:

Launch the router page and change the network from b/g/n to b/g

Next thing that you could do is change the frequency. If it's set to 6 change it to 11 and if it's set to 11 try changing it to 6.

Apply the changes and Now check if it works.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you.

As I understand you are having connectivity issues on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6500 printer. Don't worry we'll work together to find a solution for you,

Let's try these steps here:

Hard reset on the printer, router, computer and other devices on the same network.

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.

1. Press the Power button on the printer to turn it off.

2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

3. Disconnect the power cord from the wireless router.

4. Turn off the computer.

5. Wait for 30 seconds.

6. Reconnect the power cord to the wireless router.

7. Wait for 30 seconds, or until the router is fully on and ready

8. Turn the computer back on.

9. Wait for the computer to reload

10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

11. Turn the printer back on.

If you’re running Windows, I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE

If the issue still persists, I would recommend you try these steps which should help to resolve the issue:

Assign a manual IP and creating a TCP/IP port should resolve printer offline issue.

Watch the video to know how to assign a manual IP on HP Printer: http://hp.care/2cqpl6p

Refer this to create a TCP/IP port: http://hp.care/2dxUJQo

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that's awesome!

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck

I tried these steps but  it still disconnects when I reboot my laptop Envy m6 notebook PC.

In addition to this computer, I have a desktop, a Kindle and an android phone that are all connected to the printer wirelessly.  They never disconnect even after rebooting.

Also, when the laptop is connected to the printer (after an reinstall), I can turn off the printer and turn it back on and it will still be connected to the Envy m6.  It only disconnects whe the laptop is restarted. I'm beginning to think the laptop starting procedure is the culprit.
