I have HP photosmart c4288 printer/scannar/copier. Initially I had problem with "paper jam" problem. I solved it after cleaning the roller sensor. Then next problem was machine gun like sound while starting the printer. The sound was from right side of the carriage. After careful claning and oiling of the parts, the problem did not solve. Finally I removed the parts engaged in cartride servicing area. Two parts - one, the plate which moves to and fro (and cleans the cardridge ink area by rubbing a soft rubber blade mounted on the plate). The other, black colur plastic part (access it by opening a screw at the bottom of the printer). Now there is no sound and printer is working fine.

Hi, my printer was also making the machine gun sound, after having been jammed by my trying to print with double sided pages. I finally found a piece of paper wedged at the very far right inside the machine. But that didnt solve the problem at first. I had to uninstall/reinstall the printer on my Mac desktop, verify the connection, turn off the printer several times, I incidentally also changed the cartridges back to hp ones (but I don't think that that was the problem), but it still made noise and wouldn't print. and it made noise with photocopying too. and didnt' work. Then i cleaned the printer heads (it hadn't been done in a long while anyway), and it printed out the sheets of paper from the cleaning just fine (so i could see that it couldn't possibly be anything major) and then I made a photocopy, which came out ok, but still wouldn't print from the computer. Then I verified the wifi connection on the printer (I have a weak connection) and finally printed from the computer without noise!!!! and perfect.
I'm sorry i don't know which of these actions (besides the removal of the sheet of paper that was stuck way inside) solved the problem, but I suspect what made the difference was the cleaning of the print heads, though I don't know why.
I hope this helps somebody, it would be a shame to throw away a perfectly good printer if you can fix it yourself! Good luck!!!!
