Question about CPU Cores

I've had computers since '98 so I'm not a newbie but I'm also no computer genius.

I got this laptop brand new back in 2013. So far I have had a couple issues with it but since I also have a desktop (runs Vista 32bit), I was able to get things back to normal myself by doing some google searches. Nothing major since the last time I restored it to factory which was back in June of this year.

Anyway, I recently ran 'Open Hardware Monitor' mainly to check the temp and I noticed it says there are only 2 CPU Cores. I find that odd because I thought it was supposed to be a Quad-Core.

I was wondering how can I go about double checking this and enabling the other 2 cores? Would that even be wise to do?

I don't care so much for all the eye-candy as much as I want my machine to be fast and allow for multi-tasking. I also plan to upgrade the RAM right now it's still running factory - I think 6G but I'd like to upgrade that to the most and the best as well.

I've got a 5T Samsung Ext Harddrive coming soon and I just want to make sure my mess is as fast as it can be within reason of course. I'm not trying to fry it or anything. I just want it to be running at maximum performance.

Anyway, I appreciate any help or advice I can get. Thank you for your time. Amanda

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Just uncheck it. The default is to allow all processors to run. Somehow your system has limited the number of operational cores to 2. Uncheck it and reboot and recheck the task manager

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Lots of information here but we have nothing to go on to help you. We need the model number or the type of processor or something or there is no way to tell if you have a dual core or a quad core.

Re: Question about CPU Cores

OK it is an A8-4555M and that is a quad core. If you simply go into device manager and look at "processors" what does it show?

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Thank you for your response. It says "AMD A8-4555M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics" which is listed four times. TY Amanda

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Then you have 4 cores. Open Task Manager (ctrl alt delete) and pick "performance" for further verification.

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Take a look at this and see if there is a maximum number of processors set up in msconfig.

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Thank you. I looked at the link you posted and I did go to msconfig under boot, advanced there is a checkmark beside Number of processors =2. In the dropdown menu that is the most there is. I don't understand why it doesn't say 4?

Re: Question about CPU Cores

Just uncheck it. The default is to allow all processors to run. Somehow your system has limited the number of operational cores to 2. Uncheck it and reboot and recheck the task manager
