I suddenly starting getting this broken pipe message yesterday. When I right click on my printer options, as you suggest, no pop-up menu appears. (By the way, mine says "Print and Scan," not "Print and Fax.") Please advise. I currently cannot use my printer. Its a 110. And I have a Mac.

Hi Manfred33
There's a post on the Mac forum that may help.....
Does anyone have an issue printing with a wifi printer stopping halfway through a job and then spitting out the paper and going to a paused state, then the print driver banging on about a broken pipe error?
Try changing the radio channel number on your wireless router and reinstalling.
My HP Photosmart C4580 was doing exactly that, with me tearing hair. I had reinstalled all drivers/stacks, reset everything I could find (including the router) and was almost ready to re-format my MBP. I read a post elsewhere on a forum about a very similar problem and the person curing it by buying another router. I thought this was a bit OTT and was even more determined to find the solution. I then had a head slapping moment when I realised that the only thing I had not changed was the router's radio channel. I changed it from 6 to 11 - and it worked!

Your suggestion was perfect What was essential (I neglected to do this on the first try) was to reboot the Mac before re-adding the printer. Once I followed your instructions exactly, my printer was up and running. Thanks!

This solution worked well (but temporarily). The printer worked fine for a few days, then the "broken pipe" issue reappeared.
For a long-term solution, I had to reinstall the printer driver. I am running OS X, version 10.8.5. Navigating the HP site was totally frustrating and kept leading me to a dead end; the only way I could download the driver was to go to Apple support. Google the following: HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X.
Since I reinstalled the driver, my printer (HP LaserJet 1320) has been communicating perfectly with my iMac.

In my case, this error was caused by a firewall between the system running CUPS and the printer. Make sure that both TCP port 9100 and UDP port 161 (SNMP) are open.
