Working with a Gateway desktop Intel Core 2 Quad, 64 bit. I purchased the computer back when they were offering free upgrades to Win7 when it became available. Well I finally got around to installing Win7 over Vista and my Officejet j4580 hasn't been working ever since. I installed the old software and drivers and downloaded the new just fine. But when I go to install and setup, I get an error message about halfway through, saying that I don't have a file (something to do with Dot 4) required to complete the installation. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jim Murdy. I've got way too many hours in this thing

Thank you Gordon_H. I am familiar with that dot4 patch. I have run it before trying to install the Win7 ver. of the drivers and software for the full function all-in-one officejet j4580. No help. There is a statement on the dot4 patch download page that says that "this patch will not work unless the original software is installed". Does this mean I should have the original Vista drivers and software or what? I have long since uninstalled them, but may be able to reinstall - by listing Vista 64 as my current OS. I don't know. I only paid about $80 for this all-in-one, but I like it when it is working. I'm also afraid that I may encounter similar issues if I buy a new one and try to install it on this cannibalistic machine. I'm also fond of Win7 as compared to Vista, but these transitional glitches I can do without.
Thanks again for your help. I'm probably doing something wrong, as usual. Any further insight is welcomed from anyone who thinks they can get me past this setback. I really need my fax and printer.
Jim

Yes, the patch needs the original software to work. I am unsure if uninstalling your current software, reinstalling the Vista software, then using this patch would work, but I would try it if I were you. If you do so, let me know how it turns out.
