Deskjet 5150 printer restart problems after cartridge change

I have a Deskjet 50150 printer connected to a home network. After changing a cartridge it often won't print, either from the main machine (wired connection) or from wireless units. So far I have always managed to get it working eventually, but it wastes a lot of time and I've not noticed any consistent pattern in what I have to do. It would be good to have a clear procedure to follow. For instance, do I need to do anything particular even before opening up the printer, or do things in a fixed sequence. (I'm using Windows 7 if that helps. I doubt if it does, because the printer works well with this and earlier versions of Windows once the system notices it.)
