We have an HP 5550dn that was working fine when I left on night, but the next morning it wouldn't turn on at all. Any ideas on where to start diagnosing and repairing? Thanks.

More information needed. Are there any sounds or lights on the printer when you click on the power button. If not have you checked the outlet and the plug going to the printer that is the first place I would start. You could remove the network card from the printer and power on to see if the network card has gone bad which can cause power problems.

No ligths or sounds or anything, just dead.  I have checked the outlet and the cord and there is power getting to the printer, but nothing beyond that.

Sounds to me like the power supply has gone south. Located in the rear it is not that hard to replace.

That is what I suspected. Is it the low voltage power supply? This is one I found:

 Thanks for your help!

It is the one you found.

hi

f the Control panel is completely blank (no LED’s or back light) check to see if the printer is getting power. Listen for fans or any printer initialization on power up.

If there are no signs of power then perform the following:

  • Make sure that the product is plugged directly into an active electrical outlet (not a power strip or UPS) that delivers the correct voltage.

Have the user to try a different power cable if possible.

Unplug the power cord to the printer.

This is important because there may have been something that has caused the power supply to fail. If that has happened then the printer may need to be unplugged to clear the condition.

  • Remove the Formatter.

This is also important because the Formatter or a component on the Formatter may be faulty or shorted which causes the printer to lose power.

  • Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer On.

Make sure that the fans run briefly, which indicates that the power supply is operational . Place the hand over the holes in the left-side cover. If the fan is operating, user will feel air passing out of the product. User can also lean close to the product and hear the fan operating.

Listen for any signs of printer initialization (fans, motors etc), If there is still no signs of power to the printer, verify that power is coming into the printer. Bypass any power strips, UPS or conditioning devices. Try another power outlet.

  • If there is still no signs of power, the blank display is most likely due to a power issue and you should follow the troubleshooting steps for no power.

    • Remove the fuser and turn the printer on. If the printer turns ON the fuser might be faulty. Replace the fuser.
    • If after the above steps for fuser, formatter, power cable and outlet have been discarded, then replace the Power Supply Assembly.
  • If it is confirmed that the printer is powering on (fans, engine noise, etc), an engine test should be performed without the Formatter installed in the printer. The engine test verifies that the print engine is functioning correctly. This test is very useful for isolating printer problems. A successful engine test indicates that the motors, laser scanner, drive assemblies, and sensors are working correctly. The engine test prints a full page of horizontal lines across the entire printable area.

NOTE: Before attempting an engine test be sure to check that paper tray 2 is loaded with paper, the paper path is clear (no jammed media), toner cartridge is installed, and all the printer doors and covers are completely closed.
Engine Test Successful

If the engine test is successful then the blank display issue is most likely due to the Control panel, a component on the Formatter, or the Formatter.

Perform the following troubleshooting:

  1. If any of the status LED’s are on but the Control panel is blank it could be that the Contrast key has been adjusted to low. Try turning the contrast knob to see if the Control panel lights up.

  2. Have the customer send a print job to the printer.

If it prints correctly then the issue is most likely due to a bad Control panel and it should be replaced.

  3. Power Off and remove the Formatter. Check to ensure the memory device is installed in the correct slot and is properly seated.

NOTE: There may be more than one memory DIMM installed. Some printers have 3rd party applications or fonts that use memory.
  4. With the memory removed check the part number to verify it is the correct one for the printer.

  5. Reinstall the memory and make sure it is seated securely.

  6. Reinstall the Formatter making sure it makes a good connection. Power the printer on and check the display.

If the display is still blank there could be a faulty component on the Formatter (HDD, memory, fax card, Network card, USB device, etc), or it could be poor seating of the Formatter.

Verify the components on the Formatter:

  1. Take out or disconnect all removable components on the Formatter except for the CF and printer memory DIMMs. If the CF or memory DIMM is not installed in the printer the Control panel will be blank.

  2. Take out or disconnect all removable components on the Formatter SSD/HDD.

  3. Remove any third party memory.

  4. Remove any EIO cards or USB devices.

  5. Reinstall the Formatter making sure it makes a good connection.

  6. Power on the printer and check the Control panel. If the printer Control panel is working properly replace each removed component one at a time to determine which one was causing the issue.

  7. If all the above troubleshooting results in the same symptom of blank display replace the Formatter.

  8. If problem remains, replace SSD/HDD since these FutureSmart printer has firmware on them.

Engine Test Not Successful

There are a number of reasons for an engine test to fail. With a non-functional Control panel it is impossible to tell what the failures are. An error as simple as Install Toner Cartridge (caused by an improperly installed print cartridge or the absence of one) can prevent an engine test from being performed.

NOTE: Before attempting an engine test be sure to check that paper trays are loaded with paper, the paper path is clear (no jammed media), toner cartridge is installed, and all the printer doors and covers are completely closed.

If the engine test fails all the previous troubleshooting steps should be performed. If the display is still blank then replace the DC controller.
