My CP1525n was working fine, but I got an e-mail from HP advising me of a "Critical Upgrade" required. I installed it, and now my PC (Windows 7 32-bit) does not communicate with the printer. I also get an error message every time I log on saying that ToolboxFX is not working correctly. My printer is just one week out of warranty, so HP will not talk to me. Can anyone help?

Was the update for firmware or software?

It was a firmware update, that HP said was critical to the use of my printer.

I have someone I will have to ask about this. The firmware version can be found on the Self Test/Configuration Page which can be printed from the printer's Reports menu. Please check to see which version was installed.

Hi
According to my Config Report, the Firmware date is 20100430 - although the one I downloaded and attempted to install is 2011-01-11, and the one I was told I was downloading was 20111215 or later.
I hope this helps.
I have tried re-installing (the definition of madness is to do the same thing again and expect a different result!), but clearly it thinks it is already installed, since the only option it offers me when I try again is uninstall, or install on a new piece of hardware.

How is the printer connected, USB or network? My guess if networked would be that the IP address of the printer has changed, causing the driver to not be able to find the printer.
Print a config report by pressing OK, right arrow until "Setup Menu Reports", OK, right arrow until "Reports Config Report", OK. A config report will print. On the right side will be information including the Host Name and IPv4 address.
Next go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the CP1525, Printer Properties, Ports and see what port is being used. If the port setting is an "HP Standard TCP/IP Port" click on the port, click Configure Port and make sure the IP address matches the one found in the config report.
Running the network diagnostic tool at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may also help resolve the issue.

Thank you for your detailed reply - unfortunately, the printer is USB connected direct to my PC (although the PC is networked). Control Panel shows the printer connected, and set as my default.

I am not sure what you have tried at this point. I would suggest disconnecting the USB cable, then uninstall the printer driver by going to Start, All Programs, HP, HP Laserjet CP1520 Series, Uninstall. After the uninstall is complete download the driver from HP here. and install the new driver. Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to by the installer.
I have a CP1525nw printer and I just downloaded and installed the 20111215 firmware from the link above and it works fine for me....

Hi
Thanks to everyone who has offered me suggestions re this problem. I decided to roll back to a restore point before installing HPs critical update, and everything now works fine again. I agree with Bob, probably the best thing to do would be to uninstall and start all over again from scratch - but I am reluctant to tempt providence - the printer is now working fine, and if it ain't broke, why fix it?
I couldn't quite understand what the critical update was all about, as I am not on a public network (was someone going to hack in and print stuff on my printer when I was not looking?) but generally I like to keep drivers etc up to date, so went along with it.
Anyway, thanks to all
