Shane,
The driver file you directed me to is the one I have been trying. I just finished again after totaling uninstalling every file I could find with "HP" attached. Unfortunately, HP Director nor the Scan feature are still failing to install.
The following error messages are still being received during the installation process :
"File name is too long" - (see previous email to you for the name of that file).
"Error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the
scanning device is connected properly and try again". (Of course, the scanning device is an integral
part of the printer. I pressed the scan button and tried again but nothing happened.)
I have not attempted to use the fax since reinstalling the file/driver.
Why are the HP Director and the scan feature not installing?
Thanks for helping.
Percy Phillips

Are installing to the hard drive you have the OS installed on, or are you changing the install location?

Not sure that I understand your question.
I am downloading to my "C" drive (my secondary hard drive), then installing on my primary hard disk which is designated as "G" drive.
Does that answer your question?

Kind of. Which drive are the OS system files installed on?

Windows XP files are on my hard disk "G". About 2 years back when I last formatted that drive (normally referred to as "C"), the OS renamed it "G" and, without reformatting it again, I just left it at "G". The secondary or back-up drive, on to which I downloaded the printer driver, is now "C".

Try installing the printer to the same drive you download the install to. Let me know what happens.

Are you suggesting that I move the download files from my secondary drive to the primary drive (G), then reinstall? If so, do I need to uninstall the drivers as they are, re-download from HP to G, then install?

Shane,
I removed the full feature HP driver that I had downloaded to my secondary hard drive, then uninstalled the driver from my computer. Next, I have again downloaded the driver from HP onto my primary hard drive (G) and attempted to reinstall the files on that same drive. The HP Director icon appears on the desktop but there is
no response when I try to access it.
Any other suggestions.
Thanks for trying.

Shane,
I have discovered that HP has published information revealing that there are non-compatibility problems between older HP all-in-ones and later versions of Internet Explorer. However, they also publish "work-arounds" instructions which enable me to use HP Director and scan.
Thanks for all your efforts to solve my issues. I will give you Kudos for trying.
