HP officejet 4500 510a

My Pavilion notebook is on a wireless network connection through a Centuryling router (Router C2000T)  and a switch connected to a desktop e-Machine with Vista which is connected directly to a HP Officejet 4500 G510a by a USB cable. My network map shows all connected.  My printer originally worked fine, but has stopped working in the last 2-3 weeks. I have checked for all updated drivers and everything is current. When I do the "Wizard" check it shows the printer, but when it continues it shows "not connected". I have tried to print, but it obviously shows an "error message". I have also tried various troubleshooting sites, but with no positieve results!!!

Any suggestions would help!!!

Thank you

Re: HP officejet 4500 510a

Does the printer still print properly from the e-machine?

Re: HP officejet 4500 510a

Yes, the printer from the e-machine continues to work fine. The USB cable runs directly from the printer to the desktop. I did try to disconnect it from the desktop and attached it to the router USB port, but did not help!

[ Edited ]

Sorry for the delay, I saw your response but then got distracted as I puzzled over a solution.

There are a few things to check:

On the Windows 7 machine open a DOS prompt (Start, put cmd.exe in the search box, enter, then when it finds cmd.exe click on this.)  Click in the DOS window and type the following:

     net view

That will list the computers on your network.  Does the Vista machine show up?  I will assume it does,   with a name like \\vista_desktop.  Next type the following:

     net view \\vista_desktop

Type the actual name of your vista machine in place of \\vista_desktop.   This will list any devices shared.  Your printer should show up in the list, for now let me assume it is OJ4500.

Next click Start, Devices and Printers and right click on the the Officejet 4500.  Select Printer Properties, Ports, Add Port, Local Port, New Port, \\vista_desktop\OJ4500 (use the actual names for your computer and printer as found in the Net Use commands above, OK, Apply, OK.

Now try printing.  Please report any error messages or issues you see in the procedure above, or if this resolved the problem.

Re: HP officejet 4500 510a

Unfortunately, it did not print. I'm sorry but I have to leave at this time.  I will get back with you tomorrow and maybe I can make it less confusing to you.

Thank you.

Re: HP officejet 4500 510a

The second command you would need would be:

     Net View \\JOHNW-HP
