Officejet Pro 8600 won't load photo paper

Hi, my brand new OJP8600 won't load photo paper.  I've followed the manual and suggestions from other forums to no avail. The first time I put photo paper in I placed it shiny side up and it loaded but of course printed on the  back. Selecting 'card' media makes it begin to lift the end of the paper slightly, but every time I try to print I hear it try to pick up and then it displays the 'out of paper' message.

Everything else works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.  I already tried all those tips (except having it serviced, as the problem was there from brand new).  HP Support told me that only HP photo paper will work, I bought some and it does although it sometimes drags more than one sheet through.   Odd, though, because we also have 2 other HP printers in the house, an old 930c and an even older 1220C which are not fussy about paper, and neither was the Canon MP 560 I just recycled due to wireless isues with a Mac, nor the Epson I had before that.  Anyway all is good now, I love the speed of the 8600, also the double sided printing, and look forward to saving on ink. The photo print quality is surprisingly good for an office machine.

I bought my HP 8600 today.  It won't load 2 types of photopaper- both HP.  With no resolution, I'll take it back tomorrow.

HP has recently released a firmware update for the 8600 series printer.  The firmware has several product fixes/enhancements.  Below is the list:

1) Enhance ePrint Diagnostic report for ePrint Setup
2) Improve ease of wireless setup
3) Enhanced Embedded Web Services
4) Improve Print Quality
5) Improve Ink Usage
6) Improve paper path performance
7) Improve Digital scan performance 

The firmware version is CLP1CN1304AR and was released 2013-03-21.

As mentioned in 6), the paper path performance has been improved and this was directed at printing with Cardstock/Photo Paper in the 8600.  

There are 3 different versions of the 8600 and I will provide links below to the download page for this firmware update for each.

8600 Base (N911a or CM749a)

8600 Plus (CM750a or N911g)

8600 Premium (N911n or CN577a)

Base Model 8600 = CM749a or N911a (both take you to the same page)

Plus Model 8600 = CM750a or N911g

Premium Model 8600 = CN577a or N911n

Select your OS in the list (Mac OS X in your case, Alan42) and click Next.  Scroll down to the Downloads section and click on Firmware.  The firmware update utility can be found in this section.  Best of luck.
