Photosmart 6510 makes lots of prechecks before printing

My printer works fine, but every time I print a page, it goes through this long process of getting prepared to print.  Every time.  Even if I have been printing already.  Is this normal?  Is this wasting lots of ink?  Is there someone to stop this?  This is very annoying and I am regretting my choice of printer.
