Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

Hello all

I have a strange issue with my newly acquired HP 4625 All-in-One printer.

Problem: Printer becomes unavailable for regular printing on a daily basis.

Description: Each morning, when I try to print a regular document from any application on my laptop, I get an error message: "Unable to communicate with printer".

I am able to print from my ePrint account (e.g. by sendong a mail to the printer).

I'm also able to ping the printer, access the EWS and communicate with the printer, the EWS shows the printer status as "ready"... but the "regular" file->print does not work.

Network configuration: 802.11g open wireless on router (3com), 2 laptops running W7.

HP Print and Scan Doctor says that everything is OK, but printing the test page fails with the same error message

Any ideas will be much appreciated

Thanks

BAW

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

Hi, two things to check.

Is the 4625 using the CAP1FN1240AR firmware.

Set a static IP on the 4625 outside the DHCP range of 3com.

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

8lives hi

Thanks for the reply

1. Yes, FW ver: CAP1FN1208AR - couldn't find any newer version on HP's site.

2. I will try that, although the printer's IP has not changed from the first Installation, and PING or HTTP connections are working fine.

P.S. Scanning is also only part-functional due to a communication problem.

Thanks again

Hi, you can also try re-installing the 4625 software if the static IP does not help.

Hi

Seems setting the static IP has solved the problem

Thank you Professor :-)

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

Hi all,

I am having the same problem with 4625 but the solution above doesn't work for me.

Static IP outside the DHCP range.

Latest firmware CAP1FN1240AR

OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Disabled anti-virus/Frewall etc. on clients.

I tried configuring the driver ports for either IP or hostname. None solved the problem.

Ping, EWS (webscan) and e-Print (e-mail) work at all times.

The drivers get disconnected:

- I passively get the icon-tray baloon when scanner gets disconnected

- if I try running HP scan or printing I get the dialog metioned in the chain above

Only two solutions work:

- Shutting down the device and turning it on again - All the docs still in the client print queues are printed immediately.

- Re-updating the IP address using the SW utility in the client (to the same existing address). Probably a result of resetting the SW.

(For scanning of simple things, if I'm in a hurry, I sometimes use webscan. But for printing of right-to-left-languaged docs I have no other choice as e-Print doesn't support them well).

Related stuff:

- I saw a chain in the community that relates to upgrading the device from the device's menu (in addition to upgrading the FW using a client), but couldn't find the option in the menu.

- The wireless network utilization of the device is very low. Scans are extremely and annoyingly slow.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Zvi.

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

@Zvi, what router are you using?

Have you tried a different channel on the router?

How far is the 4625 from the router?

Does the USB connection also cause the same problems?

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

Hi 8Lives,

Thanks,

I changed the router from auto channel selection to manual . Tried a few different channels with no luck.

Just to emphasize, EWS and e-print never get disconnected (even when I switch channels manually). So unless the device has two different network stacks the problem does not seem to be in layer 4 or below.

The device is 20 feet from the router, in a different room. Using the device's EWS to look at the wireless status I see that the signal quality is 4 (5 being the max). Which should be quite enough.

Router is D-Link DIR-300.

Transmission rate= auto.

WPA/WPA2= enabled

Cipher-type= Auto + PSK

WMM (QoS)= enabled.

Having no other choice, I'll try USB just for debugging purposes and let you know :-(

Thanks.

Zvi.

Re: Strange Printing Problem - HP 4625 on WiFi Network

Hi,

Having exact same issues. Have tried everything possible and still no solution. Anyone with any tips?

I have now tried 2 different routers, same simptoms. Have set up  (on both routers) the Wifi from scratch several times.

 - Have tried network with WPA/WPA2, WEP and even no security. No change.

 - Have tried static IP on printer, and only IPv4 as well.

 - Have tried having DHCP assign static IP

 - Have tried manually creating a printer port on the PC (not the HP discovery port)

 - Have tried on 4 different pcs/laptops, all running Win7.

What I have discovered:

 - My printer will not even connect if the Wifi channel is not 1.

 - My Android device always sees the printer and I can print via the HP ePrint app

 - ePrinting is available

HP 4625 with latest FW available

I am ready to throw this printer from the balcony. Thanks HP for making wonderfull products......:smileyfrustrated:

@hdw, have you tried running the Print & Scan Doctor program?
