black ink won't print

black ink won't print  (color will - I cleaned heads)   HP deskjet 1050,  windows 7,

my black ink will not print - when I check cartridge ink level the box under the colors has an oval but the box under the black had an "X" , sidewise with ends enclosed - it looks like a bow tie. is this significant, and if it is, how do I fix it, please. HP Deskjet 1050, Windows 7.



PS Before it went to not printing black at al, it would print the top 2/3 of a letter sized page but the bottom 1/2 would fade out over 2-4 lines and be blank. I put a new black cartridge in and not it won't print at all

Is the black cartridge a OEM HP or Remanufactured cartridge?

Have you tried installing a new cartridge to isolate a defective cartridge?
