printer will not print [ Edited ]

I have a laserjet 1020 (one of two) on a Windows 7 Professional x64 system.

The printer is recognized by the OS and is the default printer.

the usb cables are tight and secure, the power cable is plugged in and the green ready light is on. There is no paper jam.

But the printer will not print.  If I send a print job to it, the green light remains steady and the flashing orange light does not come on.

Looking at the print queue, the print job is ready or '"printing." But the printer does not print.

If I clear the print queue, inevitably one print job gets stuck and will not clear or delete.

I downloaded the diagnostic utility and ran it. It found that there was a print job stuck in the queue and gave me the option to fix that problem. Which I did. Then on the advice of the diagnostic utility, I unplugged the usb cable and replugged it, powered the printer off and on and restarted my computer.

Then I tried again...the printer would not print and the print job got stuck again.

I tried printing a test page...no joy.

This problem surfaced soon after establishing a network between this computer and another a short distance away. that computer also has a laserjet 1020 on a Win 7 x64 system. It prints fine.

The first time this happened a computer tech who was establishing the network reinstalled the printer and it worked for a very short time--that day at least.

Windows diagnostic on this printer says that it is installed properly but it will not print a test page. Windows troubleshooting says that the only problem it can find is that it is not shared with the homegoup. I am not sure i want it to be shared with other computers and i don't know why that would prevent the printer from printing local print jobs or make the print job get stuck in the print queue.

Any help would be appreciated. Please.
