Can't receive faxes officejet 6500 wireless

Hi,

I'm suddenly having issues receiving faxes. Only one was able to go through earlier today, and from what I understand, it took 8 minutes for my fax machine to connect. I keep getting error reports saying type "received" and result "error 244*." I've tried the support instructions for on the HP website, and those unfortunately haven't been very helpful. One thing I thought might be helpful was turning on/off the ECM -- however, there aren't any instructions for doing so on my model!!

I have the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless

model E709n

Running Mac OS 10.7.4 

My fax machine is on a separate phone line - it is a VOIP line that I've had for quite awhile

Faxing over VOIP is not something that will always work.  Faxing was standardized in the mid 1970's and hasn't changed since.  Faxing was only designed to work with analog lines and VOIP uses digital lines to communicate.  You can find more information on VOIP faxing here.

Hi Zack,

Thanks for the link!  I think I may have fixed it myself this morning -- I played around and changed a few settings (ECM and fax speed). I think that did the trick. I only received one fax today (after I made the changes) so I did the HP FaxMe - which was success #2. Thanks again!!

Thanks Shane -- I learned that once before last year.... but that was when I was still under warranty! I couldn't exactly remember what changes we'd made then. Thanks for helping!
