Can't scan. HP Photosmart All in One - Error message: try scan from computer or see documentation

How do I set up scanning functionality.   I can print and copy but I've never been able to scan a document from the printer to my laptop.    Error message: "Try scan from computer or see documentation".

What printer is it your using?

 

What OS is it installed on?

 

How is the printer connected?
