I have a black vertical line that is printer on all autofed copies but not when I place document to copied on glass. The reason I know this black vertical line (3 inches from the left side) is being printed on autofed copies is that when I run a blank piece of paper through the autofeed it clearly prints a black lin that starts a quarter inch from the top of the paper and stops a quarter inch from the bottom of the paper. The line has squared ends at the beginning and end and gives all the appearance of a printed line I have already cleaned the autofeed glass numerous times to no avail.

Hello Jpb1,
It sounds like you have dirt or a scratch on the optical window of the Auto Document Feeder. When scanning/coping using the ADF, the scanner head stays at one end while the page is moved over it. So, if you have a piece of dirt or a scratch you'll end up with a streak down the entire length of the scanned image.
To resolve this issue, you just need to clean the optical scan window. I'm not familiar with your model, but all the ADFs I've seen allow you to access the opening for cleaning. Give it a try and report back if you run into issues.
BTW, Staples or other foreign objects can scratch the glass when run through the ADF, which of course, isn't repairable.

The optical window referred to is the small rectangular piece of glass right under the document feeder. Even if you can't see anything obvious use some glass cleaner and a lint free rag to clean the glass. Your first document through the feeder might get a bit wet if you don't dry it completely but that shouldn't be an issue for later copies.

I had the same problem with a J6480 All-in-One. I had to hold a flashlight onto the ADF scanning window to see the tape residue (!?) which was causing the defect in the scanned documents. Cleaned it up with a soft cloth and some glass cleaner, worked good! Thanks for the help!
