This is a copy of a post I made on 1st January. I am hoping the experts online now can help solve the problem.
When I first installed my Photosmart 5510 111a it was via a USB cable. I was able to scan to the computer from the printer control panel. After I finished setting up my wireless and ePrint successfully I converted the printer from USB to Wireless using the Printer Setup and Software. Now in the task bar of my PC I have an icon which reads "Scan to Computer is currently unavailable".
When I open the program HP Photosmart 5510 series (Network) and click on Manage Scan To Computer, a window opens telling me "Scan to Computer is enabled"
However when I try to scan from the printer touch screen an error window opens on the computer "The HP Photosmart 5510 series was not found" The printer screen asks me to make sure my computer is connected to the printer.
If I reconnect the USB cable I can scan from the printer to the computer, but it means I have two printers showing, one USB and one Network. I do not think this is how it is supposed to work.
I am using Windows XP Pro SP3.

Perform power drain on the printer ie Unplug the printer while the printer is powered on and plug it back in.
Try to activiate the scan to PC. Check if you have any firewall and add the exceptions in the firewall
HPNetworkCommunicator.exe, DeviceSetup.exe, FaxSet
ScanToPCActivationApp.exe, Toolbox.exe

I tried all those steps and I still cannot scan to computer if I set the printer as wireless. I can print to it OK.
On the printer front panel I get the message "No computer found"
On the software HP Photosmart 5510 series, manage scan to computer, I get "Lost connection to printer. Continuing to try to connect to the printer"

Try uninstalling the s/w. Download the s/w from hp.com and reinstall the s/w

I think I may have a possible answer to this problem. While I have a wireless network, my own PC does not have a wireless connection. It is cable connected to the wireless router. While it is able to print when I convert the USB pinter to a wireless one, I am assuming it is doing so via the router.
Would this configuration be the reason the printer cannot see the PC when it is not connected via the USB cable?

Nope, your topology should be fine. The conversion from the USB to wireless simply ensures that your printer connects to your router, and gets assigned an IP address via DHCP. The fact that you can print from your PC to your device when only connected wirelessly confirms that the printer is indeed on your wireless network.
Have you tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling again?
Have you tried the Scan diagnostic utility referenced on the page 1 of this forum?
Thanks
Jeremy

None of your suggestions solved the problem for me. I am changing my PC in the next week or two, so I will wait until then and see what happens on the new one.

I'm having the same problem on my wireless laptop w/W7. I can print, but cannot scan.
On my other computer, a XP, wired, I can print and scan.
The 5510 is connected via wireless...
Tried to deactivate Windows firewall and Norton Antivirus with no success..

I have now set up my new PC with Windows 7. I can scan to it via a wireless connection. Obviously the problem was with my old PC, not the printer.

I am having the same problem. Neither the scan nor copy features work. If the computer has been on for more than 2 hours, the print function will not work.
I am using Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4700 computer
Any suggestions.
