I have the same problem. I see the scanner bar moving and the light turning on during the scan process, but preview scans come up completely black. HP Scan Diagnostic utility 4.2 does not find any problems. This was also a recent purchase, and my first time attempting to scan\copy.

FYI - just spent an hour on Tech Support Chat with HP. After a power reset and restoring to factory defaults, black scans still appeared, even when a white sheet of paper was in the flatbed; copy prints turned out black and streaky. Then, the determination from the support rep was:
"The issue seems to me mechanical and it can't get fixed and hence I will now log a case and forward the case to our dispatch team and you will receive a call back within 24 - 48 hours and the replacement process would be explained and the printer will be replaced."
So, awaiting replacement printer coordination. Luckily mine was still under warranty.

I had same problem with scanner/copy tool. Scanner seems to be operating however outcome/output was a black (with some light lines through it) document. Useless.
Went down to the store and got it replaced with a new one. No probs. This was in Hong Kong.
Obviously HP have a quality assurance problem here.
It is disappointing that HP doesn't recall products or at least does something to notify new customers.
The good news is however that the dealers just replace the product.
