Have a brand new HP L7780 that has for some reason locked up. It does not respond to any buttons. Only way to turn the unit off is to unplug it from the wall. When powering up, fails to go through series of tests as it should.
Cannot update firmware and cannot access menu. Not a single button responds. Machine does not respond when you open the scanner lid.
The only response is a motor noise when opening the ink cartridge door, but no reaction when removing or inserting the ink cart. LCD has a dead clock at 00:00 AM and date is Jan 00, 00. Cannot change clock settings.

1. Unplug the power cable of your wireless router(im just assuming you have one, cos that's what causes this issue).
2. Unplug power cable of the printer and plug it back in. Now the printer should start up and it should not freeze.
3. Turn off the wireless radio of the printer by pressing Setup Menu>Network>Wireless Radio>Off.
4. Now turn on the wireless router.
If you plan to use the printer by the USB cable, then just continue installing the software and plugging in the USB cable when asked to. But if you plan to use it wirelessly, then there's a workaround.
1. With the printers' wireless radio turned OFF, plug in an ethernet cable into the printer and your router.
2. In a few seconds, it should get it's IP address. You can view it on the printer using Setup>Netowrk>View network Settings>Display Wired Summary.
3. Once this is done, go back to the Network menu>Advanced Setup>IP Settings and change the IP from 'Automatic' to 'Manual'. Confirm the IP address, Subnet Mask and the Default Gateway.
4. Now unplug the ethernet cable from both ends. Turn on the Wireless Radio on the printer. It should not freeze now. Restart the printer to confirm resolution.

Thanks! It worked. Will a firmware upgrade stop this from happening again?

I seem to be having the same problem. I've turned off my wireless router, but there seems to be others within range. The printer is getting power, since the Ethernet card lights blink when power is applied. The power button does not respond, nor do I see any messages on the front panel display. I've tried resets #3, #6 and #9, but I never see any messages on the display. If I connect the Ethernet interface to a DHCP server, will I get past the WiFi issue? Is there another Factory Reset sequence that might be helpful?
Many thanks,
Arty

I have tried the recommended fix by unplugging my wireless router, unplugging my L7780. None of my buttons on the L7780 work at all. I can print from a PC, but cannot in any other way use my L7780. Any suggestions?

I hate it when things like this happen. USER ERROR! I had unplugged the wireless DSL modem, not the Router.
