Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

My problem is a bit different.

My HP8500 is working great as a printer from both a laptop and a desktop computer on my network...works great from my iPad too.

I can scan from the printer control panel to network folders I have set up on BOTH my laptop and my desktop.  That works great.

From the desktop, I CAN execute and control the scan function of the 8500 with no problem.

My problem is that when I try and scan by controlling it FROM my laptop, I get the message that I cannot communicate with the scanner.  Yet I can scan TO a network folder on the laptop.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

Had the same problem on a 8500 at my association's office.  Someone else apparently installed it when purchased July 2011, but the scanner stopped working (could not find the scanner).  Thought it just dropped the IP address.  Not so simple

Tried to remove/reinstall both as wired and wireless.  The installation routine could not find the wired printer, although I could get to the printer's built in web site.  But even giving the install routine the IP address did not help.  Wirelessly, the routine would find the printer, but install failed repeatedly.  Turning off firewall etc. no help.

Ultimate solution:  downloaded the drivers and software package from HP to the computer's desktop and ran it from there.  (After uninstalling the printer and all the HP software)  Printer & scanner drivers installed as well as the OCR software without a hitch.  Don't know if it was an updated version or the changed "install from" location and I don't care at this point.  Several hours wasted over two sessions, but it works.  Worth the try.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

I'm not sure the point of posting here other than to vent - since I don't see HP chiming in with any answers. My 8500A Pro is wired in to my network but I can't scan from the printer control panel to the computer as other have reported here - I don't know the answer to that. The other thing I can't do is a duplex scan from a 64 bit application - which others have noted here. The answer to that is clear - the HP supplied driver is a 64 bit WIA driver. Windows 7 supplies two drivers - TWAIN and WIA - both 32 bit. So the problem clearly is HP DOES NOT SUPPLY A 64 BIT TWAIN DRIVER _ period!

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

I have had the same issue on numerous occasions and the problem revolves around certain required widows dependency services that become disabled during a windows update.  After discussion with Microsoft, the following solution should be an easy fix to scan/fax issues if you are using Windows 7.

Click the start menue and type "services"   Services will appear in the drop down menue and you then click on services to open this application.

The following system dependecies need to be listed as started and the startup type must be automatic.

  Windows Imaging Aquisition

  DCOM Server Process Launcher

  RPC Endpoint Mapper

  Shell Hardware Detection

If any of these dependencies are listed as disabled, or the startup type is not automatic you will need to reset the dependency by clicking on the service, enabling it and selecting automatic as the startup type.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

Got the same issue, the Dutch HP helpdesk helped me out at once. Apparently some Windows settings (I run Windows 7 64 bit) are switched off. Below the solution they gave me, hope this will help you folks.

First try to run the diagnostic tool

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02073847&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en

this might solve your problems. If not, try to make the below changes in your Windows settings.

Press the left key with the Windows logo on the keyboard (between alt and ctrl key) and while holding it press the r key on the keyboard.
The window "Run" appears.
- Enter the following: "services.msc" (without quotes).
- Look in the right column to the following services: "Remote procedure call".
- Click here right-click and choose Properties.
- If this service is not running, then press Start.
- Select startup type Automatic.
- Look in the right column for the following service: "Shell Hardware Detection".
- Click here right-click and choose Properties.
- If this service is not running, then press Start.
- Select startup type Automatic.
- Look in the right column to the following service: "Windows Image Acquisition".
- Click here right-click and choose Properties.
- If this service is not running, then press Start.
- Select startup type to Automatic.
- Restart your computer.
After performing these steps the scan function of the HP 8500 A910 should work properly.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

You are awesome!  Mine is an HP Photosmart 5510 series, and I wasn't even getting "Manage Scanner Options" or anything remotely similar as a choice on any menu.  It just kept telling me to either install a new printer or go to HP's website.

I tried the "installing a new printer" selection (even though the printer was ALREADY installed), just like you said, and my wireless scanner works now!

Hopefully it still works tomorrow after the computer's been off all night . . . ;-)

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

Same problem, installed original drivers, doesn't work, installed newest drivers, doesn't work, did all the updates, doesn't work.  The HP scanning software keeps saying there is something wrong, but I can scan from the Windows Fax and Scan software, so there must be a problem in the HP Scanning Software.  The officejet is connected on usb.  On a Windows XP pc everthing worked fine.  This had cost me hours and hours, perhaps a good non HP scanning software could be the solution.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

Thank-you! That was sooo easy to fix. No, I didn't reposition anything. All I did was reboot the printer, then click on the "activate scan to computer" under my printer settings. Problem solved! Thanks again!
