I have been trying to install a HP SCANJET 5300C INSTALL ON WIN XP. It works fine on Win 98se but the software
will not install correctly on my IBM ThinkPad T-43 laptop, or my Win XP home desktop computer. I used both a CD from
HP for installing the HP5300c on Win XP and I also used the latest HP download for Win XP HP 5300c sannner. Everytime
the Software installs I plug in the scanner in the USB port after I installed the software and the driver does
install the scanner. Then when I press the FAX button I get this warning: "windows has encountered a problem
and has to close" When I just try to start the software same thing happens. I have tried many times and no luck.
I just formatted my laptop so there was no HP software present and the same thing happens. Is there a way to install
HP Scanjet 5400c software on Win XP home and It will work? HELP
Jerry

Did you install using your original cd or did you download the latest drivers/software from HP?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os
Also, if you are using the USB connection there is a patch, and some other software patches that you might need.
To test if it is a software based issue or hardware go into your control panel and select cameras and scanners. Make sure your scanner is listed there. If it isn't then the driver isn't installed correctly. If it is there, double click on it, it should launch a wizard. Follow through and make sure you can scan something. This will prove that your hardware is fine since this uses the WIA driver, not the Twain driver.
If the WIA driver works, you can scan into most MS software without an issue so you might just need to use Word or Office to get your scans. Another other options is to go to www.vuescan.com and see if they have software for you scanner and XP.

The scanner is not present in control-panel cameras and scanners. However when I press the fax button on the scanner is brings
up the HP Precision software screen then goes immediately into the windows warning, closing the program.
I Installed the scanner software 4 times. Twice with a CD install disk from HP labled for Win XP, and twice with a current driver
I downloaded from HP. On the last install I used the HP downloaded driver and installed it onto my IBM ThinkPad T-43 that
I had recently formatted and installed all on it software again. There was no HP software on the computer for that install.
For some reason I cannot get this HP ScanJet 5300C software to in install on 2 different computers running Win XP home.
The scanjet software is currently installed on my IBM ThinkPad and the computer said it installed the scanner driver correctly. I have left
it installed for now hoping some easy adjustment can be made to correct the problem. HELP
Thanks, Jerry

Yes I do have IE 8 installed but I never use it. I use Seamonkey which is an offshoot of Netscape. What is the problem with IE 8
and how do I fix it. Is IE 9 out and would installing that resolve the issue? Would just uninstalling IE 8 solve the problem?

....Thanks for the cool link! What finally worked for me was installing the sj664en.exe driver and then the sj590en.exe update. My guess is that the update fixes the 'read only' business. Don't know because the computer (Pentium 4 running Windows XP) never even recognized the 5300c scanner while I was trying different ideas under just the driver.BTW, seems like the DOS attrib cmd should work to turn-off 'read-only' on the target folder so long as during driver install a user sets the path to install at something like C:/HPscan/scan/ to be DOS compatible. After the install, click on Run, type in cmd and, at the DOS prompt, enter attrib -r C:\hpscan\scan\precisionscanWhatever, I wasn't doing any good with such tricks because the scanner wasn't doing anything. It never showed up in the imaging devices listing, either. (Whic, maybe, should have told me something.)So, I did a straight, next, next, next no tricks install of the driver and update. Alas, the scanner was still dead as a doorknob and I still got the little HP intro display followed by a message about how I might have a scanner connected but the computer couldn't find it. Rats! When all else fails, might as well try the TroubleShooting option in the 'can't find the scanner' message window. It leads you through all the usual stuff...OS? I answered Windows 2000 since it seems closest to XPUSB? YesConnected? YesScanner plugged in? YesThen, we got into some more interesting stuff ...Connected to a hub? NopeAny other USB devices? YesSuggestion was to pull them. So, I did.Work now? Nope.Suggestion was that there could be something wrong with the cable or with the particular USB port. Try moving to a different USB port. So, I did. Well, right away the computer emits that burping announcement BEEP and informs me that if I expect the ~new device~ to work I'll need to do a restart! Wow!Scanner works fine.Since the device I plugged into the suspect port works fine, too, about all that's left is that the port is iffy or an iffy cable or, maybe, the cable was not fully plugged in. (Unless ... is it possible to force a USB connection in backwards?)Thanks, again and to all in this discussion.
