My mother recently purchased the OfficeJet 4500. I've set up the wireless with no issue but cannot set up the fax. When I print the fax test page, it says no active line found. I've tried using the adapter included with the printer, and connecting the printer directly t the wall jack with no "active line" found. The phone works in that wall jack so I have no idea what the problem is. My parents have regular phone service with Qwest - I'm pretty confident it's not digital.
Help! Suggestions?

I am having the exact same problem. Is this public board HP's idea of customer support ? I have hours invested in this problem using HP's own resources. This unit is BRAND NEW.
Using at&t uverse.
04/25/2012 : Now getting "The phone cord is connected to the port labeled "2-EXT" on the back of your HP device." , no matter which port is used.
I am using phone cord supplied with unit. If I use phone cord adaptor supplied with unit I get "phone off hook".
I also unplugged all phones and internet reciever and and plugged unit DIRECTLY into source bypassing all wall jacks.

Hi
Need to make sure that the phone line is plugged into Line 1 on the back of the printer. Follow the steps in the document below.

We've already followed the instructions - setup was done correctly. Our other all-in-one machine works just fine (but it's plugged into antother phone). This line is active because we have a phone plugged in there and it has a dial-tone.

Hi GreenwichGal,
Move this printer to the other phone line to see if you have the same issue?

I have done all things suggested plus at least 4 uninstalls and reloads. Now the error reads "phone line plugged into 2-EXT" instead of "active phone line not detected".
I assure you I am connected to 1 Line, direct into phone jack in my AT&T Gateway router/modem.

Hi jubal714,
To help isolate this issue I need you to setup the printer on a standard analog phone line to see if the hardware is working properly. Do you have a friend or relative which has a standard line line you can test the printer on?

I do not have analog. I just spoke to AT&T tech. and he checked my phone line and informed me any fax machine should work. I do not know anybody with analog phone service. I have wasted much time on this so far and am not amused.

Hi jubal714,
I can understand your frustration with this issue, but in order to properly diagnose what is happening we need to try this printer on a different phone line to isolate it to the hardware or an issue with the ATT modem/router you are currently attempting to use for phone service.
HP printers are designed specifically for use with traditional analog phone services. If you are in a digital phone environment (such as DSL/ADSL, PBX, or ISDN), you might need to use digital-to-analog filters or converters when setting up the printer for faxing.
NOTE: HP does not guarantee that the printer will be compatible with all digital service lines or providers, in all digital environments, or with all digital-to-analog converters. It is always recommended that you discuss with the telephone company directly for the correct setup options based on their line services provided.
