I have a LaserJet M1217nfw and I cannot scan to email - please help

What operating system are you running? Do you have an email client such as Outlook or Windows Live Mail? Who is your email provider?

Windows 7
I have PSTEL DSL service by a rural phone company
I set up Windows Live Mail and could print from email to the machine but could not scan to email
I can scan to my laptop - it is set up wireless

I did the set up that was loaded on the machine

It sounds like Windows Live Mail is not set as the default mail client. To ensure it is go to the Start Menu and go to "Default Programs". In the new window go to "Set your default programs".

Click "Windows Live Mail" and then press "Set this program as default".

I set as Windows Live Mail as default and still didn't work

I got HP Tech Support on phone and after he changed some things on my computer I ended up having to reformat my computer - REALLY

I had to get Dell on the phone and they walked me through reformatting my computer - lost 500 pictures

After a week i have got the courage to use the disc that came with my new printer and reload it again

Again - I can scan to file, print to printer, email to printer and it prints the email -- but still cannot scan to an email

Windows Live Mail is working and is set as default

When I try to scan to email it flashes the Windows Live Mail like it is starting to open - then it goes away and nothing happens

I am on hold with HP Support again now - not talked to anyone yet

If you can help me make this thing work i willbe happy to hang up the phone - but it is very late and I am sure everyone except me is asleep

Just got off phone with HP Support

The wait to speak to tech was 64 minutes

The call took 10 minutes - getting my personal info - getting serial # , etc

The answer too 2 minutes

"This printer will ONLY scan if you use Microsoft Outlook"

Is this true ??

They checked Windows Event Viewer -> Application Logs and find that the scanner application was crashing when trying to use the "smapi.dll" that is part of Windows Live Mail. These users resolved their issue by downloading an older version of the .dll file.
