I have a Photosmart 6510 that prints OK but does not Scan. Printer msg = "No computer fou

My Photosmart 6510 will print but not scan. It was scanning until today and now the printer says "no computer found". If I try to scan from my computer it gives me an error messsage "Failed to open a session \on the device"

I know that the scanner worked previously because I scanned about 500 photos and the quality is great, but for some reason it is not working today. I am using a MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.4.

I have tried resetting the printing system in system preferences, restarting computer and printer but nothing is working. Any ideas or suggestions??

                   I have a Photosmart 6510, and spent days trying to scan to computer with no luck!!

looking on the forum i seen your reply to HankBank, did as you suggested and everything now up and running

thank you very much, and by the way I have spyware doctor & registers manic installed and had a funny Idea that might be the problem, but had no Idea as how to fix it, so thanks again.

Hi Jeremy,

My 6510 works fine as a printer and I can scan tot an SD card, however not wireless to the computer. (Dell XPS wired to FritzBox, windows 7). The 6510 does see the computer, which I can select and than touch the start scan button. But then after some searching the display says scan fails because the 6510 fails to connect to the computer. On the computer an HP scan box pops up saying: HP 6510 not found.

Shell Hardware Detection is running and on automatic, same for the WIA.

When I run the HP diagnostics the printer part is OK, at the scan diagnostic it says the driver is not installed and stops there.

I deinstalled and reinstalled all software (downloaded fresh from the HP website)  five times by now, same result everytime. After five days trying everything I could find on the net you are about my last hope to get this working I guess. By the way, pertaining your last remark to HankBank: I do use a toolset, TuneUp utilities, but as I said SHD and WIA are running. Thank you for your effort, if only to read this ;-)

One final remark: I did a USB connection and that does not work either as far as scan to computer goes, with the same messages on 6510 and computer and the HP diagnostic tools stopping with a driver not installed message.

Are you able to initiate a SW scan on the problematic system?   I am guessing you'll also get the "HP 6510 not found" either, correct?

If you go into Device Manager, under Imaging Devices, do you see a 6510 listed there?

When you connected via USB, you probably saw new HW found and driver installation, correct?   Did you try running a SW scan at that point?   How about the device showing up in device manager?

Hi Jeremy, thank you for your quick response.

Yor guess is correct: a HP software initiated scan turns up "HP 6510 not found". A Windows scanning initiated new scan gives: "no scanning device found" (my translation, I use the Dutch language version, the Microsoft original wording will probably be different).

However in Device Manger the 6510 series is listed under imaging devices , with "(NET)" behind it, is stated to operate normally and the driver installed ithe HP 9.0.0.0.

When I make the USB connection Windows does say new hardware found, installs the drivers (getting several of them from Windows Update) and finishes with "system ready."

However both a HP SW scan and a Windows Scan give the same results as mentionend above.

Device Manager now shows two 6510 series installed, one with "NET" added and one with "USB" added. DM says both are operating normally and both have the drivers installed.

I hope this will give you some clues, let me know if you need more info and thanks for your help so far.

Hi Benno-

Are you able to do a simple WIA scan?   If you goto Start/Programs, you should see something called "Windows Fax & Scan".   Run this, and see if it shows any WIA devices installed.  If they do show up, can you scan?

Hi, and no, a simple WIA scan does not work either. That is actually what I meant in my previous mail. Where I mention the Windows scan that actually refers to the Windows Fax & Scan program. No scanner is shown there and when I click "new scan" anyway the program states that no scanning device is available. Although Device Manager says there is, to wit the HP 6510 series. Apologies for not stating that more clearly.

Ugh... it looks as if WIA service is somehow corrupted on your system then.  Any chance you can capture the following file and send it to me?   c:\windows\debug\wia\wiatrace.log.   I will PM you my email address.

I have a similar problem but with a 7510.  My scan to computer works just fine for a while then out of nowhere I get a taskbar printer icon with a red x and am told the scan is unavailable.  When I look at it the scan is enabled and the utility tool cannot complete its action and tells me to restart.

I bought this machine  mainly for scanning but if I need to restart my entire system every  time I want to scan it is pointless.

Should I return it and find a better product or can this be fixed.

I am running XP and do not have registry mechanic  installed.

Please help this is too frustrating.
